In NotePad, you can't...
...Change key signature mid-piece.
...Change time signature mid-piece.
...Use time signatures other than those offered in the set-up wizard (No 5/4, 7/8, etc.)
...Have a pick-up measure.
...Have more than one line of lyrics. (Use text tool to add additional lines)
...Adjust where measures fall on the page.
...Have repeats that function during playback (if created in NotePad)

Have Guitar chords that transpose (use text tool)
Have brackets on repeat endings (use SmartShape lines if you're patient and determined)
Change measure numbers
Change instrumentation after creating the score
Create a file with more than 8 staves

This sticky post brought to by the Forum fanatics so they can get back to debating the best beverage to drink with Finale. :p

More stuff under NotePad can't:
NotePad can't create swing playback, although it can play swing created in other Finale family software.
Notepad can't extract parts from a conductor's score, although you can copy and paste the parts into a new score
Notepad can't create multimeasure rests or block rests
NotePad can't create grace notes

Another thing-can you change the print size on Notepad?
ie can I fit more bars per page onto the final print than it's letting me? I'm doing choral charts and only getting two (4 part) lines per A4 sheet.
Otherwise I think it's a great free App,despite the word thing etc

Does Notepad allow drummers to use x-noteheads?

NotePad can't create x-noteheads.

But you can open and print a Finale document with x-noteheads.

And you can use that document as a template in NotePad.

See the attached example.

Thanks for the links. Very useful. I still have one question that I can't find the answer to:

How does one assign text to a measure? In Finale NotePad 2006 Help, it says to click on the Text Tool and the Text Menu should appear. I can click on "Assign to measure" there. Problem is I don't see a Text Menu.

Is this yet another thing that NotePad doesn't have or have I accidentally shut that menu off or am I just blind?

Help please.

The Text Menu appears at the top to the right of the Option Menu. It doesn't drop down from the Text Tool itself.

Hope this helps!

Hi Carla,

I'm new here and would like to know what you prefer over Finale. I've been Finale Notepad 2006 it and was directed to this forum when I expressed my unhappiness with the features of the program. I'd like the following features:

Ability to transpose chords along with the rest of the leadsheet
Some playback capability (preferably with chords)
Ability to input scores via scanner

BIAB for PC was what I used until Katrina cleaned house. It did most of the above, maybe all, but I wasn't crazy about chord naming conventions/restrictions and IIRC, time signatures were limited.

Best,

Mark,
Since it seems noone else is going to answer, I will.
I would suggest an upgrade to PrintMusic. Although I think SongWriter will also do what you want, not many people use it, at least according to what I see here on the forums.
PrintMusic will transpose chords, as long as you do it by changing the key signature. If you transpose the notes via Mass Edit, the chords do not transpose.
PM will play back with the chords.
Scanning is iffy, no matter which program you use. Most of the power users feel that it's faster to enter the piece new, than to spend time searching for and correcting the scan errors. Having said that, some people are satisfied with the scan function. Download the PM demo, and see how it works for you.

Hi, everyone!

Need enlightenment.
1.) Is there a way to create multirests in notepad? I attempted to find a way but to no avail. What do i do with 5 full-rest measures? Just a waste of space. freaked
2.) By adding more measures (and filling them in with notes, etc. and thus expanding them horizontally), does one also automatically add pages? Or is there a separate function for this?

idea

Help!

Thank you!!!

1.) NotePad's Measure Tool can't create multimeasure rests.
With the PrintMusic demo (which can save) you can create multimeasure rests (use the Measure tool's context menu).
The demo will work for 30 days.

2.) Yes, more pages will automatically be added be added/removed as needed.

Apart from studying this thread - and its hyperlinks - you might also like to study the sticky NotePad thread in the Windows forum.

NotePad can read any file created by Finale: I find that extremely useful, since I give my students the right template, even a very complicated one, and they could use Notepad to fill it in.

How about the interaction between Finale 2009 and Notepad 2008. Can you open a Finale 2009 file in Notepad 2008 and make changes to it?

I do not know, since I do not use Finale 2009 yet. But I do not think so, since the MakeMusic policy has been always against downwards compatibility.

peterG,
No. No Finale product will directly open a file created by a newer version. You can work backwards by using MusicXML, but NotePad still won't import it. I think you need PrintMusic, at a minimum.

It should be soon. NotePad follows pretty quickly, for just the reason you've found.

How many of these limitations are still there for Notepad 2011? Specifically making PDFs of individual parts and some of the drum notation stuff - grace notes, x's for shots.

All of them. NotePad is a bare-bones, entry-level program. Don't wait for MM to add features: it's not going to happen!
