Hi I'm working on a brass quintet, with Bb trumpets. It's not in a key, and I'd like to put it in Finale in concert pitch (no key sig) and then be able to make transposed parts (still no key signature). Every time I try to use the key signature tool, it wants to add key signatures to the transposing instruments. And when setting up a brass quintet, there is no way to specify an open key- so I start out with a key signature. So from there I'm not sure how to change it, nor am I sure how to make transposed parts that don't have a key signature.

Finale 2005b OS X

I think I found a fix- just changed the transpostion to chromatic for the transposing instruments. Thanks.

An easier solution might be to deselect "Time Signatures" as an item to display in Staff Attributes.

Using "chromatic" option in the staff attributes, Transposition box is definitely the way to go.
The problem with not displaying Key signatures is that Finale "decides" what accidentals to put in as if the key signature were there

eg
E natural for Trumpet in B flat
Transpose Chromatic, you will get an F sharp with the sharp showing

Using Dont display Key signatures will give you an F sharp, but with no sharp because the sharp is supplied by the key signature, even though you have chosen to hide the key signature.

In the latter case you will need to go through and force all accidentals to show where this happens.

Wouldn't a plug-in like "Show/Hide all Sharps/Flats" be a nice thing?

Chromatic transposition is the way to go. Avoid not displaying key signature. Instead, use the option to ignore key signatures. This has its uses. Do some experimenting before decisding which options or combination of oprions is fitting. Also, transposing after applying ignore key signatures will require manual transposing with the mass edit tool. However, it has its purposes, so consider it.
