I use Preview for all my work except Finale because -- I can't.

Even though I've specified that all my pdf files open in Preview, Finale's will only open in AR. And attempts to force them to open in Preview by deleting AR results in an error message. Is there a way around this?

You can get the files to open in Preview, but they don't work as well as they do with Adobe Reader. I would stick with Adobe for Finale.

I tried sending Finale PDFs made in Preview via e-mail to clients in the past, and for whatever reason (they have PCs, maybe?) they were not able to open them. Adobe PDFs always do fine via e-mail.

I may have misunderstood your question since I sent a quick answer during time-out of the basketball game. I thought you were asking about getting help files to open in Preview. Are you asking about creating PDF's of Finale files?

Rebecca,

Not sure how [suppose you could make a tiff] or why you would use Preview to make a PDF of a Finale file.
When the Finale file is open, just go to print, and print as PDF.

For changing where it opens, right click and get info, and change to Preview.

Found out the other day you can open PDF's in Quicktime Player.
Suppose everyone else knew that!

Being a longtime Mac user, I am constantly amazed at what right-clicking on things can accomplish, and it rarely occurs to me to try it.

Thank you!

right click (same as control click) on the file in the finder will give you a menu that includes open with... Use that to select preview and the file will open in preview.
