When I'm composing jazz I like to follow a general rule of always notating offbeat entrances with an eighth note tied to whatever follows. I've noticed with certain documents that I've created when I enter in an eighth rest followed by an eighth note tied to a quarter note, Finale will replace this with an eighth rest followed by a dotted quarter note. Works mathematically, and sounds the same, but reads different.
The replacement happens in a couple different ways: 1) If I copy and paste my notation from one staff to another, Finale will paste the correct pitches, but with its own notation. 2) If I save and exit, the next time I re-open the file many instances of my eighth-tied-to-quarter notation will be replaced with Finale's dotted quarter notes.
I can't find any preferences in document options or program options that seem to control this. Is this a function of font (I'm using Jazz), or some other buried preference somewhere? It only seems to effect certain documents, and I can't think of any common factor between those documents that might have something to do with this.
Also, Finale has never replaced an eighth rest followed by an eighth note tied to another eight note with an eight rest followed by a quarter note.
I spend half of every session scanning through my score to fix all the auto-replacements Finale has done. | Back to Top | |
