OK, I think I read about this already but I only just had reason to use graphic export and my searching won't throw up the thread. When exporting graphics as eps files all is normal except that smart shapes attached to the first system are ommitted. They don't appear on screen and neither do they print. Any ideas? Or anyone recall the previuos thread?

Thanks in advance
MCG

Update.
Getting round the issue by printing to PDF and then placing in Pages - does the trick but I'd still like to know if there is a way to make eps work properly.

Cheers

Every time a new version comes out, there are bugs, and eps is buggy in 2008. I do the same thing you do (except that I also open the PDF in Illustrator and save as eps), and until 2008a comes out, we will have to live with it.

Just a thought: does this simply affect the true first system of a piece, or the first visible system? This might sound a little nutty, but ...

Why not write your piece with no first system visible? In other words, begin on your second system, and optimise the first one (in Page Layout) so that it complete disappears.

If you've already written your piece, then why not add a measure before its start, lock that single measure into its own (first) system, and then hide it with staff optimisation ...

I don't have Finale 2008, so I don't know if this will bypass the bug, but why not give it a try?

I'd stick with the PDF option for now. I've never had your specific problem, but that's not the only thing wrong with the eps output. I've had final barlines turn from thin-thick to thick-thick, hyphens drop out of lyrics and curly quotes drop out of any tool they are done with.

Unfortunately for me, PDF is not 100% reliable from Finale (2005 or 2006) either. In particular, clef changes print at a bizarrely small size - don't ask me why! And that's using official Adobe PDFWriter ...

... Yet another pesky defect in Finale.

Brian,
I was not able to duplicate your problem from PrintMusic2006, using PDF Creator. I seem to recall that you've said on a number of occasions that you strip down your system to the bare essentials, to avoid bugs, viruses, add-ons, etc. Might you have inadvertantly deleted something that is causing this?
Have you tried PDF Creator? Maybe it's the Adobe that's misbehaving?

Mike, yes I do have a carefully honed system, but PDFWriter works perfectly with every other application I use, and even with Finale, apart from those clef changes!

I only discovered this problem after I found out that Finale 2006 cannot handle PCL printers in my version of Windows: Doug Blackmore suggested I try "printing" to PDF, and for a while I thought it was working, until I spotted this problem!

Writing to PDF is not that different to exporting to EPS, and let's face it, we all know (as this thread demonstrates) that this is an area where Finale is buggy and weak.

Happily, most of my music goes straight from Finale 2005 to one of a pair of HP DeskJet printers I use, and looks absolutely gorgeous on the page. On those few occasions I need computer files, I either export as TIFF or take a low-res screenshot.

Hmm, thanks for the replies people.

Brian, tried your suggestion and it does the trick - however, something bugs me about the untidyness of that extra system so I will stick with printing to PDF for now. Luckily I don't seem to suffer from any other postscript issues...yet.

Thanks again...here's looking forward to 2008a...haha.

Cheers

Gosh - I'm glad it works! Even if it is untidy enough for you not want to use it ...

... Having said that, maybe the extra (hidden) measure/system would come in handy for avoiding the timing hiccups that sometimes occur in the first measure of playback!
