I am an orchestra violinist and I agree with ag about using 'non div.'. That should be the simplest way and the easiest for us string players to catch.

I actually have to strongly disagree with the notion of assuming string players to play double stops unless divisi is noted.
As matter of the fact, when there are two lines, we almost automatically divide the passage outside/inside unless 'non div.' is noted.

Double stops is not always easy to excute. Even if the notes are easy, playing both lines smoothly can be difficult if not impossible. And even if everybody in the section is capable enough to achieve that, it usually sounds too soloistic and sticks out too much.

A very old practise in the orchestra is that if you have only 2 notes just write "non divisi" or "non div.".
The arrows and the brackets are for more than 2 notes accords to indicate which notes have to be played together and which can be more arpegiated.
Very interesting recourse for this are the Ysaye sonates for Violin solo, that he goes up to, if I remember well, 7 notes accords.

Joel,

When I try to download your file I get "Bad Request". Could it be because of the asterisk in the file name?

I'll try it again - took out all the extra spaces and stars. (They are there to enable me to find things asap)

Here is a double stop shape that I made a l-o-n-g time ago, according to David Pogue's directions in the old Finale Manuals (that he wrote) - must be from version 3.0 or something like that. Always has worked for me - stretchable and adjustable.

Hope this helps out
Joel

You can also create one as a smart shape. But, as Sophie said, unless divisi is stated, double stops should be assumed.

For years I've used the ones in the Engraver Font Set - character numbers 162, 163, and 170. You can also set them up in the Articulation Designer box to be automatically positioned correctly in your score when you enter them.

Hope that helps!

I did this using the Expression Tool and Shape Designer. It needs some adjustment, but you get the idea.

All I do is write the two notes with a single stem, unless you also add the word "divisi", a string player will double stop it, just make sure your pairs of notes are physically playable in this mode.

A great idea for a new plug-in, how about a double-stopping checker? Maybe graded for difficulty, a bit like "Check Range"? How hard would this be to write, could be a useful thing to sell to MakeMusic!

Could someone please tell me how to create the bracket looking symbol that indicates double stops for string instruments?

i.e. when a string player is playing 2 notes at the same time. I have no idea how to do this...

Thanks a lot!!!!!
