I am learning Digital Performer and would like to make use of the Garritan Orchestra sounds that come with Finale (I'm using Finale 2009). I believe I have to place the GPO files in the Audio Plug-Ins folder of my hard drive in order for DP to find them. When I look in the Finale application folders, I see some percussion files but that is all. Any suggestions? I am working on an iMac with Snow Leopard.

Hi,

I'm still on 2008, and you can't use the finale editions sounds else where!
I believe it will be the same with 2009?
If you had the full GPO, all you have to do is export the midi files to DP!
That's very quickly, make an orchestral template in DP ( in advance )
with the instruments and midi channels as in finale.

Cheers,

Jorge

Thanks for your response. So, as I understand it, you orchestrate (assign instruments) with GPO in Finale, then set up one track per instrument in DP, then export the midi file to DP. Or, wouldn't DP automatically open the midi file with one channel per instrument? Or maybe you mean something else by "orchestral template"? Sorry--DP is very new to me!

Hey North,
What I mean by Orchestral template is loading GPO to tracks like you have set up in Finale staves.
ie: track 1 (midi channel 1 ) Flute - you load a GPO flute to that track
track 2 - " Oboe " Oboe "
3 Clarinet
4 Basson
5 Horn
6 Trumpet
7 Timpani / Perc
8 Violin I
9 Violin II
10 Viola
11 Cello
12 CBass
Got it?
this an example of what you may have on finale; if it's different load the appropriate sample sound.
You may save this as a template in DP, so every time you need to open or import midi from finale
in case you're using the same instruments, everything is already loaded in DP.

When you open the midi in DP it probably creates all correspondent tracks (one for each instrument)
but won't load the GPO sounds for each instrument, that you have to do previously and everytime
you do it unless you make a default template.
After this open your GPO template in DP, import the midi tracks, and drag the correspondent midi
track say flute to the GPO flute track as all the rest tracks (one by one) make sure the tempo is the same
in case it didn't import the tempo map and it should be fine to play!

Remember all this is because the midi files don't carry sound or presets, at most it can open a general midi preset
corresponding that instrument if you open it in quicktime...

Cheers,

Jorge

Hi Jorge, Yes, this makes sense to me. I'll give it a try. I haven't purchased the GPO sounds yet, but I can experiment with loading some other sounds and importing the Midi file onto those tracks. I really appreciate all your help.
