Motet,
Just a question, since I have no intention for giving up Simple: Doesn't playing those clusters give you a lot of cacophony as you're playing in your notes? I assume that you have the sound on, while you're entering with Speedy.

...2. In Speedy Note, with Caps Lock on, tap the spacebar to insert a rest (instead of selecting a random pitch, getting a note, and then backspace to convert to a rest). Gotta keep the rhythm when you're step editing!...

I assume that you are talking about MIDI keyboard entry?

Quoting the Finale manual for "Speedy Entry with Caps Lock" (= hands-free MIDI method):

"To enter rests, play a three-note cluster, in other words, three notes each a half-step apart."

Playing a three-note cluster on the MIDI keyboard may not be as easy as tapping the spacebar on the computer keyboard, but at least you have the feature already now.

Another idea:

It might also be nice if independent time sig and meter could be based on measure regions in addition to staffs. Once I set a staff to indy time sig, especially in a long score, it seems to take an inordinate amount of time to set the meter and then have to repeat the long process for the indy staff(s). If the option is also based on measure regions, the process of changing meter would not be so tedious.

I rarely use it, but yes, you hear just what you play.

Another feature request:

Might be nice to have an option to PLAYBACK SELECTION so if you have only part of the score selected you could hear just what is selected. Along these lines, it would also be nice to be able to select non-contiguous sections for editing (like measures 3,5,7,8,10 for example).

Michael's request for PLAYBACK SELECTION has long been on my list for a desirable feature in Finale. I think it would have great utility for auditioning pitches and establishing ensemble balance between voices.

And another thing! :) In Speedy editing, wouldn't it be nice if the current frame was reflected in the movie window (ie- when the focus moves to a particular frame, the movie window follows). That would make film scoring in Finale so darn slick!

I'm with Jared on the lyrics baseline issue.  I often need to only adjust the baselines for one system.  But when I adjust verse 1, the subsequent verses do not adjust, and I end up adjusting everything.  It just makes sense that you would have the same amount of space between each verse, and that should be a default. If a baseline is adjusted, the others should as well.

I've requested this 10's of times. It's a simple request and would make me return to finale after YEARS of not using it. Graphical CC, velocity, and other midi data editing window similar to that of a DAW with similar tools (pencil, curves, lines etc) to manipulate midi data. Should probably be a drop down little window bellow or above the staff. Similar to looking at the midi data now but with much greater control. I know finale is all about automatic human playback but that just does not even come close to cutting it for professional sounding mockups.

In addition it would be nice to have a HIDE button with the exact functionality of the hide button in Logic. When it's clicked everything you've selected to hide remains hidden and staves automatically re-space, when you unclick you see all the staves again.

I don't know if finale is 64 bit, and supports 64 bit AU's but that would be nice obviously.

The hide function in the Staff Tool does just this, just as easily. When hiding empty staves, this happens by itself. You can also use the hide Staff Style in a number of ways, one of which is Hide and Collapse, which does exactly what you describe.

You're right, but I would like the 'hide and collapse' staff style to improve in one specific way:

When applying this staff style, ties and slurs aren't carried over from the system with a hidden staff (last measure) to the first measure with the staff displayed. This makes it necessary to use 'dummy' slurs and ties to compensate when dealing with divisi etc. As far as I can remember, this was not an issue with the old method of staff optimisation (although you had to enter the hidden notes in scroll view after optimising).

I see what you mean. How about if you force hide a staff (with notes) without using staff styles?

Just tried it. Looks as though you can't. Sorry! I just discovered that applying the staff style does leave the ties and smart shapes attached to measures intact over a system break. It's only the slurs ends which disappear.

You're right!

The feature request would be to have slurs behave like ties when hiding the first part of a phrase with the 'force hide staff' staff style.

Feature request: Having each layer of a staff assignable to a different channel that plays back individual dynamics and CC messages. every layer will have separate working playing-back expression, instead of the "Expressions" chanel in the score manager submenu (http://www.finalemusic.com/UserManuals/Finale2012Win/Content/image/SMInstExpand.png).

Independent horizontal adjustment of smart shapes between score and linked parts.
The ability to assign keyswitches to expressions playback.
The ability to assign multiple midi playback triggers to a single expression, and to be able to specify the order in which the midi commands are sent.
The ability to command click on any expression and get a drop-down menu which enables you to assign the expression to score and parts, score only, all parts, selected non-contiguous range of parts, this part only.

Some really helpful features for professional film scoring (some of them already mentioned earlier..):

1. The possibility to create MARKERS (hit points - description text blocks) into the score. by entering them at the exact SMPTE timecode position! (in case you change the tempo, the time signature, or insert a bar - the markers stay at the exact position - locked to the SMPTE timecode).

2. Very often in professional film scoring we create a perfect tempo and time arrangement, with marker informations in sync to the video in our sequencing software and export it as standard midi file (containing MARKERS, time signatures, tempo changes, etc...) and when it comes to notation/orchestration we simply import the standard MIDI file into Finale and finally we have all the time sigs, etc. in the score.. that works pretty well
and what we really love to see in FINALE 2013: to import the MARKERS (I know that's already possible, as 'bookmarks') but also to DISPLAY MARKERS INTO THE SCORE (as explained above).

3. Finale can import the tempo information from standard MIDI files - and with the MIDI tool it actually shows the correct tempo changes in each bar.. but it is really a hell of work to manually create and insert all the individual Time Changes (quarter note = 82 B.P.M. - some bars later: quarter note = 79 B.P.M. and so on...) that's really a lot of work to make the score look like the original cue should be.
Please can you create a PLUGIN that automatically recognizes the TEMPO information and automatically creates the Tempo Signals (for example: 'quarter note = 72').

Those 3 developments would make professional film scoring soooo much more easier!!

If anybody has more practical ideas for film scoring tools in future Finale, please share them! We would really love to see those improvements in the upcoming Finale version.

Best wishes!

My request to MM developers for the upcoming issue of Finale 2013 is rather simple:

please, make your software capable to maintain heavy contemporary scores such as Operas, Concertos etc. containing huge amount of staves, bars, lots of embedded graphics, articulation and expressions.
Finale must response instantly selecting and leaving all tools, copy-paste, nudge handles as seen for last time in version 2008 (and partially 2010).

Those of us, working hardly on projects involving great precision know what I am talking about.

IMO, the utilisation of the multi core CPU and GPU facilities for years is very common and must be reconsidered as a part of the new Finale.
Finale has to overtake ist contemporaries.
I am not talking only about Sibelius as a fast and responsible software, but Adobe Illustrator, PS, etc.

There is no need of extra features, but just fixing the recent ones to work properly well and time saving.

Now that MM has all but told us that there won't be a 2013, we should be talking about 2014.

Agreeing with Wess-Music as well. Far more than a need for extra features we need a robust application, free of (often longstanding) bugs.

We're extending the Finale development cycle. There will not be a major release of Finale this year, instead having another 2012 maintenance update in June when we'd normally release a "2013"l version.
