I have two screenshots of a spacing problem I can't seem to fix. "Spacing 1" shows three different note heads with the spacing I want. "Spacing 2" shows the spacing I am trying to fix (above the word "of"). Both are using Engraver font and have the same preference settings (included) I have cleared all special adjustments. Both documents were originally created in Finale 3.21r1 and have been opened in other versions. I am currently using version 2011c.r1

Any Ideas??

Finale 2012 aligns the stems properly, and most of the many templates of various degrees of age I use look fine in this regard. But, I have seen misalignment like this on occasion. I have a hunch this is a conversion problem with older files that are saved under a newer Finale version. I think you're stuck with having to retouch these using the Note Position Tool. In my example, the offset applied by the software was .1 inch.

Well at least Finale DOES stagger seconds (and optionally unisons) - sadly, it DOES NOT stagger other overlapping intervals at all ...

N. Grossingink's answer agrees with my assessment. I often have problems with files opened from older versions of Finale, the older the file, the worse the problems. I can usually clear the issue by copying the file contents to a new document (though I lose any formatting I have done.)

One thing you can try before resorting to that, however. Clear the measure and re-enter everything. Does the problem go away? If the problem is throughout the entire document, it may be file corruption, and you should copy it to a fresh empty document.

BTW, you appear to have the lyrics in the Spacing 1 example attached to Layer 2 instead of to Layer 1, which would necessitate nudging them left. Or was this intentional? Spacing 2 seems to be correct.

Thanks for the replies...

I have deleted and re-entered notes and nothing changes. I'll try copying and pasting into a new document. Reformatting these score won't be any big deal since they are rather simple.

File corruption is what I suspected. I had the same problems with scores brought over from Finale 2004, but when I changed the default music font to Engraver, the problem went away.

I think the lyrics are in the 2nd layer in Sample 1. I'll reassign them.

Any ideas on why the accidentals in Sample 1 bottom clef are overlapping?

This is one of the Number One deficiencies in Finale - collision of accidentals between 2 layers. It's been around as long as I have been using Finale (2001). There must be some difficult programming challenge, otherwise it would have been fixed long ago.

Huh? My accidentals in 2012 avoid each other in different layers, and always have, as far as I know. Maybe they didn't in the past (I seem to remember nudging some with the Special Tools) but they are fine now.

I guess the cross-layer accidental problem here has to do with importing a very old file (before this problem was fixed in Finale 2004) to preserve the look of the old file.

The problem with the unison Engraver notes has to do with the over-sized noteheads of Engraver, giving about the same result as Maestro 28. Using Engraver 22 for noteheads would align the stems.
