Hi,

I've been troubleshooting a battery capacity issue on my 2011-era Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.2. I've got a new battery installed (2nd one) and max capacity never has been over 3hrs. After sending logs to Apple, they mined them and told me that "There is a plug-in in your computer called: "MakeMusic's Finale Spotlight importer plugin"; this could be causing a drain on the battery as it is effecting spotlight."

Can anyone comment on this, what this plugin is for, why it might be causing issues (and even better, any resolutions)?

I've got FInale 2009 installed and a demo of 2012.

thanks,
Brian

The plug-in is a Spotlight "importer", which adds metadata from Finale to Spotlight's indexing. For some reason, it doesn't seem to work well in Lion and causes the crashes and load that you are seeing. I'm not sure if it is unique to 2012's mdimporter, or whether any version on Lion will cause the issue.
The solution is to remove the file Finale.mdimporter in /Library/Spotlight.

It's a shame, as when it works, it provides info to Spotlight such as Title, key sig, time sig, instruments, fonts used, and much more. So you could search Spotlight for files in D major that use a trumpet. Or Adagios that use Times. Or Soprano pieces more than 50 pages long.

My Spotlight has been running Indexing continuously for over a week, maybe longer. I deleted Entourage as someone suggested, but hasn't helped. I can't find Spotlight in my Library, only a Spotlight plst Preference folder.
Should I delete that? Onyx says the Hard Drive is fine. I tried to use the Spotlight thing there, can't remember maybe in Maintenance, but it went on forever, finally unplugged the computer to stop it.
The computer seems to work fine, incl Finale 2012, but it's weird that it goes on and on with the Indexing, so I couldn't use Spotlight if I need to. I have 10.5.8. Leopard. I'm very happy with 2012, and the Playback is really improved.

I did delete that Importer a few days ago, but to no avail. Wiggy suggested a couple of other things, but don't know how do them!

Remove the file "Finale.mdimporter" in /Library/Spotlight. Not in your user folder, but at the top level of your hard drive.

Yes, sorry, Jim, I had forgotten about the Finale Spotlight issue, and so I was just treating your problem as a general Mac issue. But this is probably the answer.
