I upgraded to 2012 a couple months--been working fine till this:

While in Speedy Note Entry, if I happen to input too many beats, the dialog box comes up with the typical options (Leave the Measure Alone, Delete the Extra Notes, etc.). If I select the bottom option (Keep Moving the Extra notes until all measures...) and click okay, the dialog box blinks with alert sound, I click okay again. Then Finale gives me a "Finale Error Occured! ID= -177) and moves the notes--I can continue forward from there.

If I select any OTHER option besides the bottom (Leave the Measure Alone, Delete the Extra Notes, or any of the others) Finale just quits. I've done a restart and made sure all my Finale updates are installed. I'm running Snow Leopard and religiously keep my mac system software updated so I know it's not that (unless Finale is incompatible with a recent Apple update).

Would greatly appreciate a solution here--very frustrating!

Try moving your preferences to the desktop and restarting Finale. If it stops, then it was the corrupted prefs. If it doesn't stop, you can save your old prefs by moving the file back and overwriting the newly created file.

In Snow Leopard, where exactly is that file (or what is it called)?

Never mind--found it. Deleting that didn't help, but I tried deleting prefs from past Finale versions and that seemed to work... we'll see how it does over the long haul ;-) Thanks for the tips!

Okay--so not having the quitting problems any more (very happy about that), but after I deleted my preferences (for 2012 and all past versions as well) my playback went all screwy. I can't get anything to play through Garritan sounds and even the softsynth is not working exactly right.

Any ideas?

Did you quit Finale before deleting the prefs and relaunch afterwards?

That should reset Finale to its default condition, so it's odd that playback is "screwy". Can you provide more details? Exactly what do you do; what happens, and what doesn't happen?

Do you have any other third-party software installed that runs in the background, or any audio plug-ins?

The problem you describe about Finale quitting in Speedy is a known issue in 2012a. Is/was your Midi Thru "Off"? That is usually the problem. Just switch it to something other than "Off" and you should be fine. BTW: This does not happen in 2012 vanilla release.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the help--and sorry about the late replies. Been under the weather a little and trying to finish up a looming commission in the evening hours--ahhh the life of composers I have to say...

MIDI thru is off and I did quit Finale before removing the prefs (then reopened to create new prefs). Instability in speedy note is fixed but still haven't figured out the sounds--more description:

I'm writing for a mixed brass ensemble (2Tr., 2Hn, 2Tbn., 3Eup., 2Tuba with a keyboard part) and playing my sounds through internal audio (not MIDI) . Within the score manager, when the instruments are set to Garritan, I get absolutely no sound on playback. When I set them to SoftSynth, I do get sound but with mixed results. When set to SoftSynth, my trumpets play in the correct sound (trumpet), but no matter I set the other parts to, they play in nothing but piano. The only change I can trace back to is removing the Finale prefs (though I did remove prefs from past Finale versions as well).

I don't see why that should affect my playback sounds of all things. Any thoughts?

Okay, here's a shot of the the Score Manager. I played around with the MIDI banks and channels to see if that changed anything--but the sound was exactly the same no matter what I changed them to.

That looks like you're using Playback through Audio Units, and you're using Audio Bank 2. You might want to check in Audio Unit Banks what's going on there.

What happens if you Reassign Playback Sounds in the Audio MIDI menu?

Okay--after I reassigned playback sounds, everything went back to Garritan and no more sound (only get sound when I select SoftSynth). Here's a screenshot:
