Hi everyone,

I'm excited to announce that Finale SongBook for iPad is now available via the App Store. Finale SongBook is a free app that enables you to view, play, and print all of your Finale created MUS files directly on your iPad (with support for PDF viewing and printing as well). The app is available at the link below:

itunes.apple.com/us/app/finale-songbook/id529531809?ls=1&mt=8

Thanks!

Took almost half an hour to download, but that is a server issue.

Very long launch time, and playback did not work at all, until I restarted the iPad.

Only major criticism: Can't use Dropbox to load files. This is a real issue, for me. Please add this! Both iTunes and email are less than satisfactory, IMHO.

Also, the grey on grey toolbars are very hard for me to read. The pale blue on the library page is better.

You can via DropBox, except you do have to choose "open In" from DropBox to load the file. We are looking at adding this feature soon.

Thanks. Being able to do it from the app would be more intuitive, but I can live with it. Maybe you should add that to the instruction page.

Really happy that I'm now able to use normal Finale-files on my iPad. Converting to PDF wasn't that big a deal, but this is far more convenient. I was happy to find out that you can create your own setlist and use the bluetooth AirTurn pedals. One thing though: it only flips pages within a song. In a setlist you have to tap the screen to go to the next song. Then you can use the page turner again.

A few wishes for a next update:
- Build in Dropbox support (or any other cloud service)
- Annotations (invaluable during rehearsals etc.)
- Change key
- Change tempo (for playback)
- Use custom fonts (this probably won't happen since Apple doesn't allow it, but you can always ask, can't you?)

In all I'm quite happy with this first version. It has more features that I was expecting based on the first videos MakeMusic showed.

Keep up the good work!

I really like the new app, and hope that some innovations from the SongBook will get into Finale proper, especially tempo changes in percents!
BTW, I don't use the DropBox, but it is cool to see how easy it is to upload the .mus files via iTunes (drag and drop like GoodReader), or simply open as an email attachment.

Good job!

I'm happy to have the app, but the text and the notation look horrible on the iPad 3. I'm hoping that making it Retina Display compatible is high on the bug fix list.

Sad to say, I'm not impressed. The only "special" things that SongBook will do is change is open Finale files and change tempo on playback.

But once I have a PDF (such a simple step nowadays) I can import, export, organize, annotate, and share PDFs with forScore, (and I think MusicReader does much the same thing.) I can also call up a virtual piano keyboard, pitch pipe, and metronome. I can save versions, rearrange pages, make notes on a pad. I can link it to a MIDI file, and have playback.

And if I share, I don't give away a Finale file allowing someone else to edit my work!

So I don't think I will use SongBook all that often...

I have the same result, I've installed nothing but the files supplied by default. It looks like that app has not yet been optimized for Retina.

Fonts are crystal clear on the iPad 2.
Everything works as it should except for Document parts. Most of my stuff is choral (SATB + piano). Clicking on Document Parts shows "No Parts". Does anyone know how to activate this?
If I could get the ability to play back individual parts I would give it a 5 star rating.

As far as I know, font data should not need "optimizing for Retina". It will display at the native resolution of the screen. Optimizing for Retina refers to things like icons and bitmapped graphics.

Did you create parts in your Finale file? The reader only reads what is in the Finale file it will not create separate parts for you.

Not exactly. Amazon and Apple both had to re-release their reader apps to adapt to the new screen (Kindle, iBooks). There's more to it than just buttons and icons.

I'm sure it looks great on the iPad 2, but it's awful on the 3.

Yes, I extracted the 5 parts and dropped them below the main score in the set list, so now there are 6 entries for the one song.
Each part will play back if selected from the library, but not by using the "Document Parts" icon in the full score, which resolutely shows "No Parts". Could this be a PrintMusic problem, or am I overlooking something?

Raphael,

Do you have linked parts? Or does PrintMusic even do linked parts? I loaded one of my files and it worked fine, just like the sample files.

===

I loaded the app on my wife's iPad and I think it is pretty cool. Ability to change keys would be nice, but for now I like what MM has started.

Thanks Bill and Mike,

So, for files created in PrintMusic and lower, the app is not quite so useful.
What a shame. Maybe SongBook Rev.1????

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

Just for the sake of more data, I can confirm this with PM 2011. A new SATB+piano, from the setup wizard, shows Score and No Parts in the parts window.

Cheers from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!

My wish list for SongBook is to be able to turn staves on and off on playback for rehearsal and play-along purposes. (For example, I've scored a recorder quartet, and I may want to practice the soprano part, and then, the alto part...)

Gracias,

Paco

Since I have been less than enthused in my earlier posts, I have to admit that I have used the app a few times. Not to playback, print, share, take to rehearsals, etc. but simply to view files posted on this (or the other) Finale forum.

For this purpose, it works fine, and I'm enjoying the convenience.

Mike,

Do you do that directly, or mail the file to yourself? In other words, if you download a file here, does it give you the option to view it in SongBook, or does it require extra steps?

Bill, the first time, it came down as a generic document, and I had to select Songbook from the open in... list. Subsequent downloads have the Finale icon, and open in Songbook is the primary button.

Interesting. When I wrote my response, I used upper case O for open in... , and it showed that way in the Response pane. But when it gets to the forum, the O becomes lower case. The fuzzy bunny syndrome strikes again!
