A new plug-in, called JW Yada Yada Tremolo is now available for download from the tips site. ("Downloads" section on the left side, then "Plug-ins" subsection)

It's a plug-in for Finale 2010 and later. This plug-in (a "Seinfeld"-type plug-in) does these tasks fully automatically:
1. Positions tremolo articulations correctly
2. Fixes the bug where whole note tremolo goes on the wrong vertical side
3. Lifts the stem length if necessary

The plug-in auto-detects the tremolo articulations, so it can be run on sections without tremolos as well.

Tip 1: To change side of a whole note tremolo, flip the "invisible stem" of the whole note with Simple or Speedy entry, then rerun the plug-in.

Tip 2: If you use Patterson Beams or any similar task, run these kind of tasks before applying this plug-in.

The plug-in supports the following fonts:
Maestro, Jazz, Engraver, Broadway Copyist, Maestro Wide, Petrucci, Oslo, StockholmClassic, StockholmPlate, Vienna

This is great. Every time I do tremolos I piss and moan about it. Now I'll have to find something else to complain about....

This is just wonderful. I could have killed for a plug-in like this one a month ago but never mind...

I'll be using this a LOT in the future.

This is another thing that really should be a part of Finale from the start.
Is there any way we could persuade MM to appoint Jari as a full-time Finale developer? A petition anyone?

I just tried out your plugin, and I'm seeing some issues on layer 2 tremolo placement on quarter notes. See the before and after graphic below.

I also downloaded it today and experienced the same results as Jeremy. Layer 2 in particular, both stemmed notes and whole notes.

For the common, single-voice, unbeamed situation, I just tweaked the out-of-the-box articulations a little bit (why

didn't MM get them right?) and made a new one for whole notes:

The plug-in will be good with layers and short stems, though. Thanks!

I don't get the same erroneous results as Jeremy. Possibly there are other custom setting at play. I am testing on the default file and all looks well.

EDIT: I think I know what might be causing it now (flipped stems compared to layer direction).

EDIT2: Just found another way to force some multi-layer verticaly out of position that wasn't related to a forced stem direction. When it happens, it always seem to happen to stems down, though. I think I have the erratic behaviour covered now.

Version 1.02 of "JW Yada Yada Tremolo" is now available for download from the tips site. This update fixes the rather big position bug related to downstem notes that Jeremy and Thomas encountered.
So if you use this plug-in, please update to this version!

This update also includes:
* Support for the RevereFinale font
* Support for the FPArticulations font (including the wider/flatter tremolo at slot 174)
* Positioning for flag notes is now calculated based the flag settings in Document Settings, rather than assuming that the user use the same font for articulations and flags.
* Some vertical position adjustments for some fonts
* More accurate horizontal placement with breve notes
* 'z' tremolo now positions accurately with both whole and breve notes

As usual, let me know if something doesn't look as you believe it should.

I just read the Wikipedia article on "Yada yada" and may have seen that episode of Seinfeld (they kind of lost me the last few seasons),
but don't get the reference in this plug-in. At the risk of spoiling the joke, what does it mean?

The "real" Seinfeld reference here is actually another one than yada yada. Just replace "tremolo" with "button".

The opening scene of the first episode AND the last scene of the closing episode of Seinfeld featured a conversation about the top button being too close to the collar on men's shirts. Only this plugin is about tremolo markings being too close to the top of a stem. The conversation is stupid in the extreme, while the plugin is very intelligent and on-point.

What effect does the plug-in have on tremolos that have already been manually adjusted?

Should this be showing in the JW Plug-in Tool Manager? (It's not showing there for me.)

It will reposition those tremolos as well. Test on a few passages to see if the plug-ins end result is good for your purposes.

Could you e-mail or post me a small document with this issue? When I test the engraver font, I don't get the same result as in your screen shot (the 8th get lifted here, but not in your document for some reason).

I found the bug - it's related to the rest and note on off-beat. I'll fix it!

David, the bug you encountered should now be fixed in 1.03. Let me know if you find any other problems. Other things in this update:
* Support for the GoldenAge font
* Improved vertical positioning for flagged note tremolo (single stems) in the fonts StockholmClassic and Oslo

Just using the tremolo plug-in for the first time on a a chamber orchestra job this morning. Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant!

Makes you wonder why MakeMusic couldn't manage to put stuff like this into the application in the first place though...

That's much better! At the risk of sounding like a PITA, could the tremolo markings be just a little higher? Or is that silly? See attached jpgs. (I think they attached)
Thank you for all your hard work and inventive solutions to the myriad situations that arise when engraving music.
Anything that can make the path easier to achieving a great looking piece of music I appreciate.

Clarification: regarding the tremolo markings being a little higher on the stem, away from the note heads; it seems to be the upstems in my example. Downstems look fantastic. absolutely no tweaking at all necessary
