I am a professional engraver and publisher, and my printing shop is all set in OS 10.6, a stable system we don’t want to change now. We’ve only seen problems in 10.7, especially with custom fonts and font annotations, making it unrealistic for us to upgrade. Also with 10.6 we can open file in older version (most of the time down to 2007), which will not be possible in the latest OS. So many people still use OS 10.6, I can’t believe you guys overlooked this!

Sorry, no upgrade here.

OSX 10.9 Mavericks is a free upgrade, and it most likely will work on your system.

The decision to not support 10.6 in the next Finale version was announced by MM months ago. At that time I moved onto 10.8 (skipped 10.7) and have had no problems. Hopefully your experience will be the same.

Éric,

The lack of support for OSX versions below 10.7 was announced this past spring. There was a discussion about it here: forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?f=6&m=396983.

I'm curious to know whether 'not supported on 10.6' means it simply won't work on that, or rather just that one will get no official support for technical problems from MM.

I currently have two computers running 10.6.8 and one running 10.8.5. Finale 2010 is 'not supported' on 10.8, but it works perfectly on that OS (I'm not sure about 10.9, though).

I'm currently in the process of downloading Finale 2014.

In the past, that has meant, "you're on your own." They haven't (officially) tested it, and won't help if you have problems. But they have never said, "It just won't work." Brian's experiences seem to bear this out, as well.

It won't install on OS X 10.6.

Ach well! Thanks for the clarification Justin.

That means I might see if there's some way I can get hold of 10.7 for my MacBook, which won't take 10.9 (or 10.8). My main desktop computer will be fine with F 2014, though (it currently runs 10.8.5, but I'll up that to 10.9 soon enough).

I would suggest contacting Apple, they have made these available for people in the past.

If not now, then when?

Mavericks is not Lion. Lion was pretty poor, but Mavericks is a completely different OS.

The new file format will improve this situation in the future. However, perhaps you should keep one computer on 10.6 for older versions. (Or use virtual machines?)

Eric, I sympathize. Snow Leopard was the last OS that was pure Mac (no iPad nonsense), and works great. This OS upgrade-o-mania that breaks the stuff that works is getting slightly enervating.

I totally understand, moving operating systems can be a pain when you're working with lots of software you rely on. I tried to spread the word as early as possible so people could prepare, and we can improve on that in the future.

We discontinued OS X 10.6 due to the rapidly declining user base (high majority are on 10.7-10.8, and 10.9 is growing quickly) and for technical reasons with the new Mac version. Supporting 10.6 would have meant less features and fixes in Finale 2014 due to special casing for the operating system and testing.

I really dislike discontinuing operating system support, but we have to make some trade offs to make the product better.

You might like to try using the third-party installer called "Pacifist" to install Finale on a 10.6 system. It allows you to bypass any "testing" that prohibits the installation, but who knows what will happen once the files are installed.
