I'm at a choral retreat this weekend, or I would just be experimenting at home...

For the first time yesterday, I looked into creating MP3 files with 2012 on the Mac, just before I walked out of the house (see above!) There was no option to do so, like I remember on Windows.

I looked in the online user manual this morning, and it doesn't mention MP3s on Mac, just "compressed Audio file." Is that the same thing, or do I still need to use Audacity and LAME?

The 2014 manuals talk about compressed audio file for both Mac and Windows.

(Yes, I'm back to using 2012. 2014a works in a new user account, but not on my primary, and I haven't got the intestinal fortitude to find the problem. Or to keep flipping back and forth.)

When using MIDI, Finale allows rendering directly to compressed audio. Test that and see what Mac does (what kind of file). However, converting from wav to compressed can be done outside Finale. Audacity is one way, of course. I think iTunes can do it as well.

As a Windows user, I shouldn't be commenting. But there are options, AFAIK.

I guess that's the question: is the compressed audio the same thing a MP3?

Export to audio .aiff. Then in iTunes convert that to MP3. First go to iTunes preferences>import settings and make that MP3. Then select the file in the iTunes window, then File menu>create new version>create MP3 version.

It seems a bit convoluted, but it's easy enough once you get the hang of it! (I may have left a step out somewhere, I have to work the exact detail out each time, as I don't do it very often, but it IS easy enough.)

If you create an audio file from Finale and drop it on iTunes it will create an MP3, as long as iTunes is not set for lossless sound.

I'm assuming you're using Garritan sounds, right? If you use MIDI, then creating an MP3 directly is an option.

David,
Thanks, I'll give it a whirl.

Bill,
No, I'm just using soft synth. After reading all the comments about loading sounds, and ARIA player, and the like, I decided that was way out of my pay grade. All I saw was "compress audio," and I looked both with Play through MIDI, and Play through Audio Units. Hence my confusion?

In Windows, Finale renders compressed as mp3. There are other compressed formats in Windows, most notably wma, which is Windows own proprietary compressed format. There are other compressed formats, as ogg. However, mp3 is the most universally used. Mp4 is another format.

Zuill

P.S.: If you're using softsynth in Audio Units, you don't have the option of mp3. You have to select MIDI.

Maybe I'm just confusing terms, and/or not going far enough. I'll try it this evening or tomorrow. Thanks to all for your comments.

As Bill points out, if you already have iTunes import settings at MP3, then it should import directly into iTunes in that format. I leave the setting at Apple Lossless, which is more or less MP4 I think, so I have to create a separate version if I need an MP3 for e-mailing &c. If you most often use MP3, and don't regularly import CDs etc into iTunes, you might be best to leave the import setting at MP3.

Zuill, I'm nearly sure that you must be specific and do it via iTunes if you want an MP3 from Finale on a Mac unless you are creating the audio file via MIDI.

I would still do it in a program like Audacity, where I have more options, such as normalizing and trimming.

Mike,

On my version of 2012, the export to Audio (File>Export>Audio file...) gives you the choice of a Standard Audio File (I assume this is an AIFF file) or a Compressed MP3 file. I don't really know much about the differences between audio file formats, but when I save as a "Compressed MP3 file" from 2012, the resultant file has the .mp3 extension and is listed as an MP3 audio file in the get info box for the file. This would lead me to believe that 2012's compressed audio file is an MP3 file. Like you, I just use the soft synth, so there is no need to go outside Finale to get an MP3 file. Hopes this makes a bit of sense.

To follow up on what Jim wrote, my understanding is that if you are using Audio Units you can export WAV or AIFF. If you are using MIDI you can export AIFF or MP3.

This may differ in various versions, but I think this is correct.
