First, I have already also submitted a support case about this.
Second- for me forum search is not working for long (just submitted it to forum support too), therefore I cannot search if this issue has been covered. I apologise if it is.

1) make a new document, one staff, 4/4 time for example
2) go to speedy entry and enter 4 quarter notes to measure 1, layer 1, lets make them a-b-c-d, the entry frame will jump to measure 2
3) switch to layer 2, go back to measure 1 and enter one whole note to the 1st measure, lets make it f, the speedy entry frame jumps to measure 2 again
4) while still in layer 2, go back to measue 1 with speedy entry frame and place the speedy entry cursor on top of the whole f-note you entered before
5) press the appropriate key to change the duration of that note to a double whole note (I am using the default 8-key on numeric keyboard)
6) not the dialog appears: "there are too many beats in this measure", select option 3 from top "move the exra notes to next measure"

What happens now did not happen before F2014. The correct behaviour would be to extend the 2nd layer f to the measure 2 so we would have two whole notes with a tie over the measure line. Finale 2014, however, copies also the four quarter notes in layer 1 to measure 2. And it doesn't stop here: when changing the copied quarter notes in measure 2, the changes are mirrored also in measure 1. Of course it is not a mirror feature of Finale, this is a bug. "Convert mirrors" command does not work here.

When this file is closed and re-opened then Finale reports errors in the file and everything gets "corrected". Depending on file, the content of layer 1 in measure 2 or measures 1&2 is missing.

I wonder if this is the "spontaeous mirror" bug reported elsewhere and not related to layers at all. What happens if you do such a double-whole-note correction in a single layer?

Here's the "mirror bug" thread.

By the way, for searching the forum, it's best to use Google, adding site:forum.makemusic.com to your search terms.

I'd noticed this, as well, and I find it really annoying since I often intentionally overfill measures as a means of making ties over barlines. This still works as it should if there's only one layer in the measure but if you've already entered music in another layer, that music gets shifted by the same amount as the overfilling in the other layer, effectively screwing things up royally. I've already reported this to MM but it would be good if others did this, too. Hopefully it'll be fixed in the pending update, although don't hold your breath.

The problem as described by kaumann does not happen on Windows F2014.

One possible workaround for you Mac types is to display only the active layer 2 when you change the whole note to a double whole note.  Just an idea.

Unfortunately the suggested workaround does not work:
Even when “Show Active Layer Only” is selected, the Layer 1 notes get mirrored in measure 2.

That's too bad.  It was only a suggestion off the top of my head.  I have re-tested this on Win F2014 several different ways, and I cannot get it to act up.  This must be another of those Mac only issues.  Strange indeed.

Thanks for pointing out the original thread.
The search function of this forum doesn't work for me for long. It is not a browser problem because it does happen in Safari and Chrome.
I attach an image to show what happens for quite some time already every time I try to search this forum.
This is also a reason I couldn't find the thread about this bug.

I use Windows and I do get this erroneous behavior. Too bad.

Zuill

P.S.: Choosing the 4th option does not display the bug.

Zuill,

Now I am confused.  You say you do get the problem, but then you say you do not get the problem if, presumably, the 4th radio button is chosen in the "Too many beats" popup dialog box.  I do not get the problem in F2014 with the 3rd or 4th option.

I must apologize to kaumann, Zuill, and any other Windows user following this thread. I guess I didn't pay close enough attention to the quarter notes. As Zuill said, if option 3 is chosen in the "Too many beats" dialog box, the layer 1 quarter notes do indeed copy to the next measure. However, as Zuill also said, if option 4 is chosen instead, the layer 1 quarter notes do not copy to the next measure.

This behavior is on Windows F2014b and F2014a.

kaumann, have you tried option 4?

PS:  I have gone back to Windows F2011b and F012c and can confirm that this was not an issue with those versions.

I've had problems with this, as well, and can confirm that it hasn't been fixed in 2014b. I hadn't noticed that selecting the 4th option doesn't copy the notes in layer 1 to the next measure. Thanks for pointing it out; this will help when I want to overfill a measure intentionally to tie over the barline.
