I need to enclose a melodic pattern into a graphical box followed by a straight arrow. In other words, how can I create a musical module graphics to be repeated across several measures ? Is this possible to do with Finale 2002 ? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Andrew,

You can make the box as an Expression:
Create a Shape with the Rectangle Tool in the Shape Designer (set the Line Thickness to 2 points or more), place it in the measure, double-click its handle and resize to the desired proportions.

Then add an arrow which you could also draw in the Shape Designer, or you could use one from a 'special' font. EngraverText has one located on Shift-; (- you could set the point size to somewhere between 48 and 72).

Use a MetaTool to place the rectangle in the score if you plan to use it more than once. That makes them independently adjustable.

Jesper

PS. I would like to see a font with horizontal arrowheads (heads only). Does anybody know of one?

Is something like Wingdings 3 what you had in mind?

Although not shown in the above linked page, there are indeed a few arrowheads, along with complete arrows (the latter make up the most part of the font, however).

Both Wingdings and Zapf Dingbats have various horizontal arrows. Unfortunately not heads only.

Thanks Riccardo and Peter,

- I need to clean up my system fonts! Actually I do have Zapf Dingbats and I found a quite useful arrowhead on Shift-Option-R.

A Smart Shape 'custom line' with 4 pt. thickness (End H: -36 evpu/V: 33 evpu) and that arrowhead at 24 pt. could look quite good as a 'simile' indication - maybe in connection with a 4 pt. rectangle.

I must see if I can find a Wingdings 3 chart somewhere.

Regards,

Jesper

I don't have Wingdings 3. Where can I get it?

Jesper,

thanks for your help. In fact, I made the box as an Expression (Rectangle Tool, Shape Designer) but I couldn't find where to increase the line thickness in the Dialog Box options. Would you help me to find it out ?

By the way, you can find black arrowheads in Wingding Fonts (options 223 to 238 ).

Sure Andrew,

In the Shape Designer you should use the Select Tool (the arrow) to click on the rectangle, then go to the Shape Designer menu> Line Thickness.

There's a lot of other possibilities in the menu as well.

Good luck,

Jesper

This page contains a partial character chart and suggests that Wingdings 3 can be obtained for free with the MS Office Value Pack (Macintosh). For those who find the Microsoft site to be too much of a mess, hostile to any non-IE browser, a Google search for Wingdings 3 should yield plenty of working links.
