I would like to color code certain phrases of music. Different layers can be color coded, so I thought I would change the layer of my phrases. But when I select a phrase which does not end with a complete measure (the next phrase starts with a pick-up), and then try to change the layer of that phrase, a warning appears that the new layer will include the whole measure.

Can I change the color of partial measures with Finale? Any other ideas for color coding phrases? I'm using 2001d.

Mass Mover > Move Layers does appear to only operate on whole measures. However, you can always enter a single note in any layer.

So if you have, say, a phrase of five quarter notes, four in one measure and one in the next, you can change the four with Mass Mover, then delete the fifth and re-enter it in the desired layer.

A bit tedious, but it will give you the result you want.

Hi Anonymous,

Thanks, it definitely works. As you say it's a bit tedious. In the second phrase (with the pick-up) I still need to enter, in layer 2, "dummy" rests at the beginning of the measure. I then make the rests invisible. Fortunately it's for a short piece, so there are not a lot of them to do.

When Coda first made colors printable, they talked about the wonderful pedagogical opportunities (I'm teaching form here). But for these purposes it sure would be nice to be able to switch layers easily in the middle of a measure.

Thanks again,

Gil
