Using Finale 2011 on a MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (older mac, 2.33 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo).

Worked on a Finale document for about 20 hours, always saving, over a period of a week. Turned on the mac a few days ago to finish off the document. While Finale was opening up, got the message: "While attempting to access ("name of piece"), the File Manager reported an error. -39.

So it won't open up the document. When I check out information on the document, it says it's 0 kb in size. How can it be 0 kb and not there after constant saving? I made back up copy before the last time I shut it down, but the back-ups all say the same thing; probably saved the same problem in the back-ups.

Is it still there somewhere and how can I get to it to retrieve the music I've written out?

You could post the file here to see if anyone else can open it, but the zero KB size is a bad sign.

Did you back it up on Time Machine?

I use Finale 2011 on Snow Leopard also. If your setup behaves like mine, you will find a folder in the trash called "Rescued Files" every time you boot up the computer. The rescued files are always "Enigma Temporary Files" which are actually Finale temporary files. Try to open any of these files with Finale. They usually don't open, but I've seen some that do.

If that doesn't work, do a search for "Temporary Items" and see if that turns up any Enigma Files.

My suggestion is probably a long shot and way beyond my knowledge, but give it a try.

Unfortunately, didn't back it up on time machine.

Tried the Enigma Temporary Files, but unfortunately, they are not doing anything.

Can't track down any temporary items.

But thanks.

I know this doesn't help you right now, but that's one of the many reasons for having Time Machine set up and turned on all the time. In a case like this one you could navigate back incrementally, keeping track of the file the whole time, to the moment just before it changed to 0 KB. You can restore several versions of it to see if any corruption was being introduced along the way. TM is built into the OS and works in the background, so you don't even notice it, but it's there when you need it. Highly recommended (for the next time).

@Bacchus Music: I've never received any messages from you. It sounds like you may have inadvertently subscribed to this thread, which causes the forum to send you e-mail notifications for this thread even if you haven't posted in it. Log into your account, visit this thread and look in the top-right corner of the webpage. You should see something that looks like this:

However, instead of saying "Subscribe to this thread," you'll see "Unsubscribe to this thread." Click that, and you shouldn't see anymore messages. If you do keep seeing messages, or if you need to contact a MakeMusic mod in the future, you can PM me directly or visit my sticked post at the top of each Finale forum.
