I’m pleased to announce that Finale 2014.5 is now available for download. Finale 2014.5 is a free upgrade for all Finale 2014 owners.
Finale 2014.5 incorporates new features, bug fixes, and significant modernization of Finale code, including many Mac-specific updates resulting in performance improvements and full compatibility with Apple’s OS X El Capitan operating system.
The installation of Finale 2014.5 will not change your existing 2014 installation, but installs as a new separate application. There is no need to delete or uninstall 2014d before installing 2014.5.
Features added in this release include:
- Options to automatically create double barlines before key changes
- The ability to change sample rates
- A means to quickly and easily reorder staves
- Enhanced MusicXML and EPUB support
- Options to automatically create double barlines before key changes
- The ability to save SmartMusic accompaniments with premium VST/AU instrument sounds, including the provided Garritan sounds
- Updated SmartScore X2 Lite scanning software, with many improvements in core musical features such as beams, augmentation dots, and tuplets
All plug-ins provided with the update have also been modernized, and many have been enhanced, including Finalescript, Global Staff Attributes, Latin Percussion, TG Tools Lite, Band-in-a-Box Auto-Harmonizing and more. Finale’s documentation was also overhauled, offering vastly improved search results and compatibility with any device, including smartphones and tablets. (This could allow you, for example, to have Finale’s documentation displayed on your iPad while you work on your laptop or desktop computer.)
The release also resolves several dozen bugs, prioritized by customer requests. A complete list of what’s included in Finale 2014.5 for Mac users is here You will be directed to your update to Finale 2014.5 by opening Finale 2014 and clicking Finale 2014 > Check for Updates. Thanks for bringing us the update. It does feel a lot quicker than 2014 (opening files, scrolling, etc.). And I'm happy that it works with El Capitan.
I'm afraid I also found a bug within the first minute of working with 2014.5: The master tool-palette isn't working anymore (you can still activate it, but it doesn't switch to the selected tool, at least on my Mac). I hope will be addressed soon.
Cheers,

Thanks for your reply. I've restarted Finale and rebooted my Mac. But the problem still exists. I'm talking about the master tool palette, not the main tool palette. Could it be that you are talking about the main tool palette (which indeed doesn't give any problems)?

The font annotation files are all in the right places, there are no font conflicts (all Postscript) and I've restarted. The files display fine in 2014 but not in 2014.5. In addition, I can't get 2014.5 to open files full screen, despite the fact that I've set a document to display full screen and saved preferences. Some palettes will not 'remember' their preferred positions between restarts: the playback window and the special tools palette go to their default positions and the Simple Entry palette always shows up, whether I've chosen to see it or not. The latter are merely annoyances but the font annotation problem is a show-stopper for me. Vaughan

@Bruce: I checked and 2014 and 2014.5 create separate preferences files, so you should be able to run them concurrently. My program preferences do get saved but between sessions 2014.5 still won't remember the positions of playback or special tools windows and that I want the document to open full-screen. Interestingly, it does remember settings for the main tool palette and the other windows. Once I've made these changes, 2014.5 will remember them only until I quit (whether or not I've saved the preferences).
Other than this, 2014.5 seems to be working well so far. The window focus problems also seem to have been solved.
I solved the FAN problem by installing the TT versions of the fonts anyway. So despite the fact that I have both TT and PS versions of some fonts installed, FontBook shows no conflicts and Finale seems to choose what it needs. Go figure. Vaughan

Following on from that, does one have to authorize 2014.5 separately from 2014, or is it automatically covered by the authorization of 2014?
I should add that although I have downloaded 2014.5, I don't aim to install and try it until I return home next week after a few days away (down to Glasgow). Meantime, I shall continue to read with interest (and slight trepidation!) all comments here. David Ward www.composers-uk.com/davidward

Except for a separate preferences file and different source folders, it's looked upon as the same version, although you can run them concurrently. With the exception of the slight annoyances I listed above, I'm pretty happy with it, although it'll take me awhile to test for things like the mirroring bug or the slowdowns I've experienced while doing layout work.
Just a quick note to QuicKey users: after creating a new 2014.5 scope and duplicating your macros, some of the keystrokes might not work. Occasionally I've specified the name of the program in the shortcut and usually this isn't necessary: specifying Front Application instead of Finale 2014 should enable the shortcuts to be shared by both Finale versions. I also had a couple of macros which activate functions under the Finale menu item, like changing enharmonic preferences (favor sharps, favor flats, use spelling tables). The Menu for Action shows Finale 2014 but if, next to it under Details, you change 'Identify by Name Is' to 'Identify by Name Contains', the shortcuts can again be shared by both Finale versions. I'm curious as to whether font annotation still works as expected for 3rd party fonts like November, etc. Anybody care to comment?

I haven't seen any issues with FANs - I'm using Type 1 fonts mostly.
For me, it's a much more responsive version than we've had for several years. It's fixed the bugs with Font Styles that have driving me silly since F2011, and it's very stable on EC. (I'm enjoying using EC's split screen to have Finale in one half and a Preview PDF manuscript in the other.) I don't get the slowing down with larger documents that I used to have, and there is still some, but less, SBoD with the LYrics Window.
It's introduced some unexpected new features, and made in-roads into tidying up the interface. Yes, I still have some bugs on my list of pet peeves, but I think it is unrealistic to get every bug fixed. There is an extensive list, particularly on the Mac side -- including the slash character in printed parts, and no transposing-on-pasting, which are probably two of the most frequent complaints.
As ever with Finale: enjoy what works and be pragmatic about what doesn't. Considering the company moved to a different town with a new team at the start of the year, I think congratulations are in order to Mark and everyone at MM. "This is me helping."
