I just purchased a new iMac G4, which
requires USB midi interface and OMS in
order to run Finale. So far, I have been
unable to EVER get a USB connection to
work properly - any help out there for this?
I have done a "studio test" and have
gotten the signal that the MIDI is working
both ways, but when I try to enter music
with speedy entry, all I get are rests. I am
a seasoned vet on this software, but am
truly stumped on this one. My serial
connection was so simple, but this one
seems to be more complicated than I can
figure out. My system includes an
Ensoniq MR 76 keyboard and a Midisport
1x1 USB (system X compatible) interface.

I have tried all the obvious remedies, but
nothing seems to work. It is repeatedly
crashing my new machine to the point
that I have to turn off the power. I have
also rebooted in system 9.2, but that, too
is crashing the iMac.

Thanks for any help!

Here's what works for me...

In the MIDI communication box, select "Finale
MIDI Driver". There will be a brief delay, then the
IN and OUT boxes below will change. Now simply
re-select your OMS setup. Exit and, hopefully,
enter notes. This "wakes up" the program to
re-scan for OMS, apparently. In any case, it
usually works for me.

If not, and there are rare occasions when it
doesn't work, then a cold reboot may be in
order.

I'm pretty sure that with Finale in OS X as it currently stands, it will not accept MIDI input. So you'll have to boot into OS 9.2.2 to get MIDI input in Finale at this stage.

In terms of it crashing 9.2.2, I don't have this particular interface, but you should make sure you have the latest drivers (from the manufacturer's website). I have also found that certain USB MIDI interfaces don't like the computer going to sleep.

Good luck with it.
