A very specific Finale question, for the
mavens in the forum:

One of my gripes about Finale is that
there has never been a good way to do
cross measure beaming. So, say for
instance, you are writing in 3/8 and you
have a rhythmic pattern which goes
along in groups of two eighths for a while
in one part. In order for the beaming
notation to reflect the rhythmic pattern, it
needs to beam across the bar-line once
in a while. (This sort of notation happens
in music as far back as Brahms.)

There's no effective way to do this in the
program, at least that I've found. I use two
work-around methods:

1) I use the beam extender tool to drag a
beam forward/backwards to the
previous/next measure (and use other
tools, to make a fake flagless stem and to
make sure everything "lines up"
angle-wise). This method only works in
patterns where there exists a beamed
group on one or other side of the bar-line.

2) If there are two single flagged eighths
(for instance) on either side of the bar-line
to be connected, I create custom
stems/beams for the notes --one a stem
with a beam; one a stem only. This
works, but is a huge pain and is a matter
of trial and error mostly.

BUT: the problem with method 2) is that
the music spacing can often be totally
screwed up. For instance, if you ever
need to re-space for any reason, the
program understands the newly-created
stem-beam combination as a giant note
and leaves a huge space at the end of the
measure (thus, un-connecting the fake
beam and defeating the whole purpose of
the work-around).

So, any one have any bright ideas or
suggestions on this issue?

...or the easiest way, get Robert Patterson's recent cross-bar beaming plugin.

You can get it via http://www.finaletips.nu

Read the chapter in the help menu on beaming
across barlines. The first method shown
works the best for me.
Give it a try.
