I want a shape expression like the picture below: two arrows, showing a part split. I did this with the custom line tool, but it took two operations, and the balance was pretty critical. In the shape expression designer, I see no way to put on the arrowheads. I tried the crescendo mentioned in another thread, and I liked it, but my editor doesn't.

Can I do it? Can I constrain the angles so they match?

(I want to do the same thing reversed, but once I get one, I should be able to do the other.)

Let's start with this, done as a Shape Expression. You can add an arrowhead to a line in a Shape Expression.

Mike,

Do you have the November font? That expression is in the font.

Zuill, that looks fine. Can I have some clues as to how you did it?

Bill, no I don't. But I'll look into it.

Thanks!

For future reference, in the shape designer there's a ShapeDesigner menu that has an Arrowheads choice. Pick an arrowhead and it will then go on lines that you draw.

Using the character from Bravura or November, what control do you have over the shape, other than change the font size?  Can you extent the lines, or widen/narrow the angle, etc.  These are easily done with the Shape Expression approach.

You have no control.

On the other hand, for this particular situation, I don't need any. The editor likes it just the way it is.

I agree. Using a font symbol attached to measure is the most safe way.

I think Zuill does this frequently on purpose to stimulate self discovery!

I have put together a simple document using the Shape Expression approach. This may not be exactly what your editor is looking for, but it shows the versatility of the Shape Expression approach. Expression placement, line thickness, separation angle, and other line parameters can be adjusted. Any conceivable arrowhead can be used.

I said...

Isn't that it in a nutshell?

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I never find the shape editor a happy experience. It has no Undo, so if you make a mistake you're forced to start over. The zooming has always baffled me--easy to zoom in too far and then lose where your shapes are. I still don't quite get the paradigm for typing coordinates in the text boxes. I am able to eventually get a shape made, but it's always a fair amount of trouble. Is there a tutorial?

As an example of the goofiness, I was fine with to lines with arrowheads. I thought I would Group them to keep them from separating. That caused an unbelievable disaster once in the document. Sometimes grouping works, sometimes it doesn't You never know.

It is an archaic tool, but still quite useful.

There is always a need for showing different means to an end.  Mike may be happy with the font character, but others following this thread may find it too limited.

When building the shape in my example, I used the text boxes to make the end points of the arrowheaded lines be precise.  I used the selection tool to select the line, then clicked on the handle at the end of the line.  The coordinates appeared in the text boxes.  I simply made them be a nice round number, two decimals.  In so doing the vector was precisely defined for both arrows.  I made sure to start the arrows when the dynamic coordinate was 0,0.  After placing the expression in the document, it is easy to adjust the position and size by dragging the handles that show after double clicking on the shape handle.

For me, I find it more productive to use Illustrator then Shape Designer. - just my opinion.

Many people do not have the luxury of owning the very expensive Adobe packages in addition to the very expensive Finale package.

Don't forget the free open source software "Inkscape" which is sorta comparable to Illustrator.
