Watch:

bit.ly/21f32xW

Look at R 235. As I apply rehearsal marks, there is a gap between the numbers, until I apply it for R 239, and then the sequence corrects itself. Then, when I delete all the marks, what was R 235 is now (correctly) R 234.

This is all over my score and it's costing me lots of time and headache. What is the cause of this (and occasional other random expressions that I'm finding)?

Where did that "pp sub." come from…?! And the restarting of the rehearsal sequence. Finale 2014.5, latest El Cap. Ugh…

We would have to examine a file to find what the cause is. Looking at a video tells nothing.

Both of these files are having problems due to hidden expressions. Clear them and all should work fine.

In Example 1 I found there was a hidden rehearsal mark in the last bar on page 2. Clears selected items/Expressions fixed that. In Example 2, I selected the measure stack at bar 6 and did the same thing.

Thanks, but correct me if I'm wrong - this will clear any legitimate expressions as well, yes? In other words, you have to know what you're looking for, and you don't know that until you poke around and discover it, yes?

The examples I gave didn't have a lot of music, but there are other passages where I can't do a brute force expression clear. Unless I'm missing something?

You might be right. Somehow, this errant behavior got introduced, and I can't find any way of seeing where it is.

Try this: Highlight the whole score. Copy everything. Clear Everything. Paste everything back in. Lock systems first, if that matters.

Zuill

P.S.: I added "Copy Everything" into those instructions.

Nice idea, but it doesn't work with the same file. If I create a new file with the same instrumentation, it works, but then there are unknowns there, I suppose.

However, I discovered this - changing all the system Categories (Tempo Marks, Tempo Alterations, etc.) to a new score list - in this case Score List 2 - made all the phantoms display. Scary! I suppose I can work with this, at least. But I shudder to think what would happen if this went unnoticed.

I seem to vaguely recall corrupt Score Lists being an issue in the past on old files, like pre-2008 or so. But this was originated in 2014.5.

(yes, "Copy Everything" was inferred from your instructions)

Of course, there still isn't any way of telling which are the legit expressions and which are phantoms, except by painstakingly comparing with the manuscript (sigh)

Check this one out - the rehearsal 1 and the "leggero" appear to be linked together. I think this qualifies as beta testing now ;-)

Interestingly, if you drag leggero right so that it attaches to a different beat, then let go, the two are then no longer joined. Also odd that leggero can be dragged down to the second flute staff, but no further and once there, cannot be dragged back to the first staff.

You've done odd things with category alignments--maybe that's it (though it shouldn't be).

I have never seen all of this odd behavior. If this is from a template you've created, it might be time to create a new template.

Do you intended that to be in the expressive text catagory rather than dynamics, or did it get there some stray way?

Maybe so… though it's relatively clean compared to some of the templates I've seen over the years. This was a file that I inherited from someone else and I modified it. But still, these things shouldn't be happening, regardless.

I put that in the Expressive Text category because it aligns like other Expressive Text (left) instead of Dynamics (center).

Ideally you'd want the pp portion centered under the note. To achieve this, uncheck "use category positioning" and specify left-aligned with -46e for an additional horizontal offset. If you're going to uncheck "use category positioning", you might as well put it with the other dynamics.

The 46e is different from dynamic to dynamic, of course. The way to figure it out is to apply an unadorned dynamic to a note and the new, left-aligned adorned dynamic to the same note, zoom in, then nudge the new dynamic until the p or whatever is aligned with the unadorned one. Then right click, pick Edit Expression Assignment, and see what the horizontal offset is. Add that to the definition. (The press Backspace or Mac equivalent to clear the manual nudging.)

Elaine Gould even specifies that something like subito p have the p centered, unless it makes it ambiguous, in which case you'd write p subito instead (I'm not sure what I think of this last idea).

Where horizontal space is wonky, I've previously used p (sub.). No need to spell the whole word out.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

Thanks, regarding the "pp sub." dynamics, there were only a handful of them in the legitimate file and I nudged them manually in this case.

Please, though, I'd rather not go off-topic here. The main issue is the problem with the file showing (or not showing) phantom expressions and possibly corrupt Score Lists.

If these few samples are just the tip of the iceberg, then starting from scratch might be your best option. Copying everything into it might work, but sometimes wonkiness gets copied too. I must have a pretty clean workflow, as these issues don't happen.

The fact the you inherited this from someone and then did your work on it might suggest the corruption was there when you got it. I avoid team-working on projects for this very reason, because very few people who claim to know how to use Finale properly actually do. I like to know how things are in the file. When I do it myself, I have no-one to blame but me, and I know pretty much exactly what I did.

I appreciate the replies and ideas. I ended up spending the better part of yesterday tracking down these expressions and deleting them. In the end I judged it to be the lesser of two evils than the unknowns of what would happen on a copy-paste.

Entering 5000 bars of an opera from scratch is not possible here, I'm afraid, and the file is not in bad shape otherwise.

Hopefully someone can track down this bug in the future.
