Dear Hive mind,

I know it has not been out long, but I don't seem to be able to get playback Ambience to work:any help appreciated.

I am sure there was a good reason to change it...

For some reason it's no longer supported. Kind of annoying for those of us who wanted to apply reverb to all instruments at the same time. Now we have to do it to all instances of the Aria player separately, or am I missing something?

Some of the better interfaces allow you to add reverb to your inputs and outputs, some allow it more selectively than others. If you're using an audio device like that be sure to check the settings.

I tried adding Ambience to each instrument through the Aria player (an unnecessary extra step and REALLY annoying in a large orchestral score!) but I couldn't get it to affect playback.

Either I am missing something, or this needs to be ironed out before I would be prepared to shell out $150 for less functionality. Whilst I can imagine situations where one might want more local control, for the majority of 'classical' uses I would have thought that a global setting would be virtually a universal preference. These days I find that conductors and performers invariably ask for MIDI realisations as they prepare a premiere or consider a commission, and the output that I have been able to achieve so far in 25 is not usable.

Perhaps I could achieve it by adding another device to my system to get the room acoustics I want, but it seems to me that one shouldn't have to buy additional hardware to maintain functionality that used to be part of the software.

Please correct me if I have missed anything, but for now I'm sticking to 2014.5.

Just had a thought: is it possible that Ambience is 'turned off' because I have only the demo version? The Garritan sounds don't come with it, but it automatically loaded my GPO 5 libraries so it surely should have worked. . .

Why not use the convolution reverb?
Also, doing a google search of Ambience, it's available as a free download.

You don't have to add ambience to each instrument, though you do have to add it to each ARIA Player bank, so that's 16 instruments at a time. I'd be surprised if you can't set a default value for the Player though.

I suggest asking MM how to globally set Ambience.

SimonAndrews, no, Garritan Ambiance is not turned off in the demo version. It's turned off, period. I spent much of yesterday installing Finale 25 and the Garritan instruments I have onto a 64 bit system. I started work on a piece which I started in the 2014.5 version and the first "error" message I got was that Garritan Ambiance is no longer supported (and I have the fully paid for, registered version). I found the G. Ambiance plug-in to be most useful, handy and easy. Would be interested to know why it was eliminated.

The AU Convolution Reverb is fine.
I turn down the wet/dry ratio to 0.

I liked Ambience too. I like very much having the possibility of different reverbs or reverb settings on different instrument banks. But it seems a needless waste of resources to have load duplicate instances of the same reverb with the same settings. I wish Finale did this the way ALL DAW dids, where you can have a single or several reverb (or other plug-ins) on an aux channel, and then determine the amount you want to send from each bank (or better still, each instrument).

Since I'm using a combination of wet and dry sample libraries, being able to dial in the exact amount of reverb on each instrument would be lovely. Doing it for each bank is a step in the right direction.

Is the AU Convolution rev. as good as Ambience? Right now I have EW's Composer Cloud, so I'm using QL Spaces for reverb and it sounds really good. But I'm thinking of letting my subscription lapse. Does anyone have a good all-purpose hall-type reverb they recommend for use in Finale? I was thinking maybe the Waves IR-L, which I've used w/ Protools on a different system. Or maybe something from Valhalla?

When people say "the AU Convolution Reverb", do they mean the Apple Matrix Reverb?

Try Valhalla.

http://valhalladsp.com

$50. and WAY better than the price suggests. I use Valhalla room as my main DAW reverb for almost every project. The interface is a little plain, but the presets alone will get you what you need.

The best price/quality choice for a true convolution reverb (very realistic emulation of actual halls, etc.) is LiquidSonics Reverberate:

http://www.liquidsonics.com/software_reverberate.htm

It's $110

Both will sound way better than the Garrison.
