I know that parts should generally be transposed for transposing instruments.

But what is the convention when you're giving, say a trombone, a cue from a coloratura soprano - or some other situation where the cue notes would be well out of range of the instrument? Is it okay in those cases to just transpose (where necessary) and write it in an appropriate octave for the instrument (in my example, then, somewhere on the bass clef staff), perhaps qualifying with 8va or 15ma?

you would use the appropriate clef for the instrument that is supplying the cue.
so if a coloratura soprano were the cue in a trombone part, that measure or those measures of coloratura soprano would be written in treble clef.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries), putting Finale 25 through its paces.
Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

Ah gotcha - wasn't sure if that was legit, but that's certainly the easiest solution!

Of course, as far as I can tell, it is still impossible to make percussion staves display normal notation (without actually making an instrument change, which is a pain but I guess I can do). I would think this would be doable with a staff style, but still in Fin25 it seems undoable.

I write a bass cue in a flute part in bass clef even though a flute player doesn't read that clef. There are those that disagree, but it's not like the flute is going to play along. 15ma or whatever for a cue seems silly.

In 2011 I'm used to using a Staff Style which applies "Standard Notation" in a percussion part for a few measures so I can write a cue. Looks like you can indeed no longer do that in 2014.5. How terrible! Is there a way with the Score Manger?

For percussion I've taken to doing like Bartok in the Music for Strings Percussion and Celesta: I create a single 5-line staff that is "cues" at 75% reduction, and beneath that one are the percussion instruments' staves (at 100%). That way, the percussionist can always follow what's going on in the other parts.
Yeah, it makes my percussion parts a few pages longer than if I didn't do that, but it also makes them WAY clearer in my opinion.

To answer my question above, looks like in 2014.5 you can use Change Instrument to tenor voice or whatever for the cue (not a pain at all):

(I don't like the natural, though!)

Motet, could you not define the percussion staff as having no accidentals? (in the Score manager, transposition)

Motet - yes, that's what I'm doing. And it's true, it is not a pain - as long as you give up the dream of truly linked parts and score.

And I've given up that dream... I imagine everyone has? I have a separate score file for parts, though in the first version of this opera I did try to keep everything linked, so those little instrument changes were a big pain (how to deal w/ them in the score...the hiding of cues too...so much aggravation at the end of the day - not worth it!)

Ah yes, the score. Even the old way with staff styles the suppression of cues in the score seems like a pain.
