For many years -since 1989- I have been sorely missing longer note characters for early music in the standard Finale Fonts...
I know solutions using third party software exist. (Toccata, Fughetta, November...)
However premium music notation software as Finale is, should offer these characters by itself, to my humble opinion! Basic for me...

I would like Finale to offer not only longer note characters like brevis and lunga in font sets Maestro and Engraver but also to add them to the Simple Entry Palette so that their duration is taken account of and making these characters practically usable...

I you want to support my feature request on this topic, please go to the Finale Feature Request-website and vote!

Thank you all, Regards, Jan Melaerts.

To be honest, the requirements of pre-1600 notation is a fairly specialised request, and there are many more urgent improvements and additions that need to be made to Finale for the benefit of a wider range of musical styles and a larger 'audience' of engravers.

I've not tried, but I wouldn't be surprised if you could "shift down" all the note values: make Finale's breve look like a long; make Finale's semibreve look like a breve; make the minim look like a semibreve. (Though there's an argument about the merits of displaying original note values using late 19th-century note forms...! :p)

One of Finale's great strengths is its flexibility and the many ways in which it can be configured.

Here's a bit of fun, which does use longs at the end:

OK, I'm curious: Exactly what is the symbol for this lunga that you want?

I have never seen it other than as the words lunga or lunga pausa or L.P. written out.

If it is the square or angled fermata symbols, they don't mean that anymore (if they ever did).

They're talking about the note value used in ancient music, the "lunga". Take a look at the link to the PDF in Wiggy's response. You can see them near the end of the piece - looks sort of like a double whole note, only stemmed.

Ok, I have never seen that referred to a a lunga before and I have a number of examples of early notation with that symbol. Thanks.

Nor does that show up in any Google search that I could devise.

Perhaps the correct term is "longa." That's how it's referred to here:

/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Note_value

I've seen "lunga" written under a fermata, meaning "long time."

I posted a simple script for Jari Williamsson's JW Lua plugin some time ago on the finaleforum.com that automatically converts two tied double whole notes to a longa and four tied double whole notes to a maxima. It uses the longa/maxima symbols from the free Fughetta font, but it's also possible to change the script to any other font that includes the longa symbol (for example Bravura, MScore, Opus Special or the LilyPond fonts).

The implementation of more note durations is desirable but then there should be more for the centuries before classic. Please have a look to the attached file. The problem are the small. For the Quarter Note and downwards we need the possibility to have different noteheads and different flags

Werner, isn't that what Klemm's Medieval plugin does ?
I have never used it, but it sounds like it's made for your suggestions.

Das ist das Mittelalter (Neumen bzw. Gregorianisch 600+/Modal 12./13. Jhdt.). Die Longa gehört zur Mensuralnotation (13.-16. Jhdt.)

Sorry that was German. The Klemm PlugIn is Gregorianik / Medieval (7th century). What we need ist Mensuralnotation (from 13th century).

It is very easy change the noteheads to diamond shapes, move the stems to the middle of the note and use different flags. You can use November, or MuseGraph's Firenze, or any other many other fonts. You can even do it with Maestro, though obviously the result is too "clean".

Werner, as Dr. Wiggy said there are templates for entering mensural notation directly into Finale.
For example here is a short screen cam video that I did with the November2 "Renaissance" template and the "Make Longa" script above.

A more sophistacted example is in the November2 documentation:

Is there anything particular that you are looking for that is not covered here ?

I thank you all for replying to this topic!

I do know plugin solutions exist for the needs of mensurale notation. And I'm not afraid of add-ons!
What I can not understand is that -even for contemporary music- a standard Finale user is limited in note duration to a brevis (Double Whole Note).
Why not a Longa (Quadruple Whole) or even Maxima (Four Double Whole Note duration)?
It seems me to be a basic feature, one that is not so terribly difficult to add in Font Sets and Palettes.
Although Finale would also need the ability to recognise and work with the duration of maxima notes (= 32768 EDU)...

By the way, in Europe we call a "Longa" often "Lunga" (Italian)...

Thanks for your valued input, esteemed Finalists!
