I just got my copy of Finale 2004 and it seems pretty good, but I tried to experiment and scan some music. First off, I'm a bit disappointed that it's not possible to scan directly from Finale (how difficult would it have been to include a twain acquire component?) But I'm even more disappointed that I'm getting an error message that says "The file format is not compatible with SmartScore Lite" (see attachment), and I can't import the music that I've scanned. I'm saving the scan as a tiff, which is what the manual says. I even watched the video tips and noticed that the suffix on the video was .tf instead of .tiff, so I went back and changed it on the file. Did I miss a correction somewhere or did I not read the instructions correctly? I could understand if the program didn't like my scanner or the scan was blurry, but I can't even get to the point that those things would make a difference!!!!! HELP!

I believe scans must be 2-bit [true black & white] to be accepted by SmartScore Lite; you can check this in an app like Photoshop. Also, do a search on the forum(s) for "SmartScore" or "scan"; there have been many posts on this topic, some quite recent. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunatley, I had done all of the things that you suggested before I composed my last posting. The darned thing just doesn't seem to work! I had to do a project over the last few days and have discovered that there are many more quirks to the program than there should be! I hope that this initial release is being worked on and that there's an update soon!!!

This may just be a mistake in terminology, but a true black and white image is 1-bit. A 1-bit word has two levels; zero (black) and one (white). For the sake of those who are curious, a 2-bit word would have four levels, 00 (black), 01 (lighter gray), 10 (darker gray) and 11 (white).

The tiff needs to be black and white, 300dpi, and no compression (LZW). If you have Photoshop, you can confirm or convert the image to this format and try again. If you get it to work, look it over carefully, since it will probably need some editing.

All the info on TIFFs is interesting, but it isn't getting me any closer to having Finale accept my scan. I'm using Graphic Converter, and I've saved and re-saved and re-scanned and re-saved a document in every uncompressed format that's available. It just doesn't work! As I said in my last email, there are some other things that need to be fixed as well...for example, if I change some notes in a measure and hit the play commance, the change doesn't take affect. When that happens, I have to restart the program a play the piece (if, of course, it hasn't crashed before I had a chance to save the changes.

Again, I'm hoping that there's an upgrade coming soon to fix these problems. I guess I'll have to call tech support about the scanning problem.

Try this. Also, are you using the stop button, or spacebar (which is pause)?

I've done both...space bar and stop button, and it gets hung up with the old information.

Your image worked. What were your settings (I'll drop it into Graphic Converter, also)?

1-bit, 300dpi tiff, no LZW compression. I used Photoshop. Your problem may be the Graphic Converter.

Well, I'm certainly not going to purchase Photoshop to scan images into Finale (I'm still a bit annoyed that there's not a twain component so that one could scan music directly into the program). Thanks for your help. I'll see if I can get it working with what I have.

I'm not a programmer, so I don't know whether adding a twain component to Finale would be easy or not, but before they spend time and resources into such a feature, I would like to see them fix the export eps problem.

I recently had the pleasure (?) of scanning and re-importing an entire book that M** B** had lost the original files for. I had *no* problems with it, *and* i usually use Graphic Converter to do the work (even though I recently acquired Photoshop). I *have* encountered some problems with the second page of a scan being stuck in the default time and key, but managed to work around each of those. I haven't encountered any of the recent problems mentioned (like slow-downs) recently, on either my 1GHz FP iMac or my 800MHz G3 iBook. Maybe it's just clean living! ;-)

After posting what I thought was an off-hand comment, I received this e-mail:

Dear Geoff,

I strongly object to the notice you posted on the Finale Forum saying that we “lost original files on an entire book”. This is not true and you know it. You need to print a correction to this or we will take further action.

William Bay
President
Mel Bay Publications, Inc.

Actually, I don’t know anything of the sort, but, okay, here’s *my* recollection of the situation. (I’m sorry it’s only recollections, but I searched every old e-mail file I could find, and even dug out my old Performa 6116 to see if they were there, but to no avail.)

Several years ago (within the last 8, since it happened after we moved into this house) I decided I wanted a printout of a tune from the Mist & Stone book *without* all the tab numbers and hammering indications on it. Imagine my surprise when I couldn’t find the files *anywhere*. I was not in the habit of throwing *anything* away (ask my wife), not even electronic files, but they were simply *gone*. I didn’t like the idea of not having any copies of the files I had worked so hard on, so I thought I’d ask the publisher if I could get copies back. It hadn’t been too long by my thinking (3 years or so) since I had sent the original files to Mel Bay on a Zip disk, so I emailed the contact person I had and asked if I could get copies of those files. The person at Mel Bay (I believe it was a woman named Lori Williamson) replied to the effect that “we have no idea where those files are, and in any case the disks would have been used for something else.”

I think it should be obvious why I took that to mean they were lost, and I thought nothing more of it, but promised myself I’d reconstruct the music files, at least, at some point, but when was not an issue, and it didn’t happen until recently when I needed the files for another project. (The reconstruction wasn’t any trouble with the music recognition in the modern version(s) of Finale, and that was really the whole point of my original posting.)

I don’t have any solid evidence to support this, but my best guess is that Mel Bay had not completely bought into the electronic way of doing things in 1993, and once they had camera-ready copy, they simply discarded the original files. This is certainly their prerogative, but is so completely counter to my own mindset that it never would have occured to me.

Long story, but I had my reasons for believing as I did. Short version is, mentioning Mel Bay by name (even the obvious hint of M** B**) was unkind and unnecessary, and I do apologize for causing Mr. Bay any distress. I don’t believe I’ll ever understand his company’s way of thinking, but that just makes us even!

Geoff (I may not be organized, but I *know* that paper’s in this pile *somewhere*!)
