This is what happened. I've been working on Finale heavily for the past three days, saving about 30+ files for a 200 measure piece for orch. Today, I took some earlier files and put them in the trash. When I emptied the trash, one file was left and would not delete. I tried everything I could think of but it would not delete. A message would keep showing up saying something about files still being used and I don't have priority to delete it. I then went to may Apple store and the tech there worked on it for about an hour and a half but could not delete the file. He went to some screen that you had to type in commands. It was the terminal screen. He went to OSX forms and tech support but could not get it deleted. I could not live witth this file in my trash can so what my last resort was to erase my HD partition which had all of my Finale music. Luckily I backed up most of my files on another drive. Well this did the trick.

The tech told me that this was a 'sticky flag' thing and that it could not be deleted without erasing the HD that it is stored in. It was a .mus file, created by Finale 2004b. This might just be a fluke but maybe not.

I hope some MakeMusic programmers visit these forums to see if this is a problem in 2004b. Other than that, 2004b is much better.

Back up those irreplaceable files, Dean.

Hi Dean,

"The tech told me that this was a 'sticky flag' thing and that it could not be deleted without erasing the HD that it is stored in."

I hate to disagree with an Apple techie, but if you log into an OSX computer as root user (you will have to enable this with the netinfo manager), you can delete pretty much anything thing you like, including the system, so proceed with caution!
You can use the terminal program and the "rm" command to delete files from the command line - but there is no way back if you delete the wrong thing. Type "man rm" without the quotes in the terminal for more info.

Hope this helps

They do from time to time, but to be sure they get your message, send an email to macsupport@makemusic.com.

I've had this happen, but not with a Finale file, so I don't think Finale is to blame. (Previously it was an acrobat file).
I restarted the computer, zapped the PRAM, fixed disk permissions and it deleted. I have had no problem since, but then it only happened once anyway

Dave Hage,

The Apple tech tried the 'root user' route and he still couldn't delete it. I remember having to login many times while he tried to fix it. He said that he tried EVERYTHING that he knows.

I'm just glad that my trash can is empty.

Dean.

There used to be a trick for getting rid of a balky file. You create a new file with the same name and save it in the same location as the bad file so the new file will replace it. Sometimes that works. You'll probably need to take the bad file out of the trash to try the trick.

I must say that my experience with Finale and other programs are 99% positive. I go to different forums to learn more about a specific software/hardware and read all these problems that other users are having. I don't understand why? Most programs I use are written very well and most problems are because of user error. An untidy HD, not keeping up with utilities to maintain a healthy drive. Loading all kinds of junk into their computer. What do you expect?

I realized that this is the first time I complained about a program as far as I can remember. I'm proud of myself. I love what Finale allows me to do. MakeMusic keep up the good work.

Dean.

This problem was not a big deal anyway.
Happens all the time that some file doesn't get deleted for a while.
I wish this were the biggest problem with Finale.

If you went to Apple store for that, hope you don't shoot at your Mac if the real problems arise scool

I had this happen with another type of file. I took it out of the trash and looked at the information of the file. When I looked (press the "i" button on the Finder toolbar to get the info of a file), the "lock" box had been checked. I also made sure the permissions were set right. I then was able to delete the file and empty the trash. I didn't have to rebuild anything, or reformat, or anything.
If you go here, there is an article on it:
docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106272

Good luck
