Random thoughts, rants.....

They should consider having bar selection behave like a word processor. Shift-left/right arrow selects one letter at a time in text programs, similar equivalents in Finale would be cool:
Shift-arrows - One bar at a time selection (one beat at a time if in Partial measure mode, left and right only)
Opt-shift-arrows - would replace current shift-arrows behavior, selecting out to end/beginning.
Also, any tool involving bar selection (Bar, Staff, Mass, Clef, MIDI, etc) should have the above behaviors.

I see there's still issues with score expressions and pickup bars, with regards to dragging. That's been there for awhile, or has at least resurfaced.

What's with the chord suffix editor? Why hasn't this been updated? It's been virtually the same for 10 years!...and is still inefficient! There has to be a better way.

When choosing a default file in the Program Options area, how come you can't browse to the file? Typing in the name seems awfully strange.

Finally! Open Recent files! How long was this in development?

Playback a file (via play controls), pause, switch to another doc, resume play. Playback resumes in new doc at the right corresponding bar, but you hear previous doc.

The Handgrabber feature within the Font Annotation window doesn't work properly. Image disappears.

I like double-clicking a note with the slur tool, and getting the automatic slur to the next note. How about some modifier keys allowing automatic slurs over 1 beat, 2 beats, 2 bars, etc.? Or something where you click-hold and use arrows to move the end of the slur as far as you want to go. Anything to avoid dragging!

Preset Copy Items configurations! There are many times where I want to, delete just chords, copy just articulations, copy just entries. Having to go in and check boxes for each scenario gets old. Have programable configs in a submenu. In OS9, I use the Keyquencer macro program to go in and check boxes for me.

Key commands for next/ previous page.
Key commands to move up and down staves in staff attributes dialog. Trying to click on those teeny arrows is not healthy.

Copy staff feature! Many times I want to copy a staff and its attributes, but currently, you have to create a new staff, and hand-adjust all checkboxes, transpositions, etc. My scores sometimes involve two players on a staff, which I need to break apart. I'd like to make another staff identical to that staff to work with.

Edit in multiple page display.

Why doesn't explode music divvy up layers accordingly?

Less consumer candy, more productivity features.

I know there must be pressure to jam in enough new features to justify an $80 upgrade every year, but jeez, some of the same things have been lingering. I'd be happy if MakeMusic took a year off and just fixed/updated existing features. Hire Mac people who seriously love Macs, and wouldn't let half baked software out of their office.

My current favorite feature request?

On-the-fly ability to change patches/channels (in the Instrument List) while a file is playing back just like real sequencers have had for a decade.
Once you push play in Finale, all you can do is listen because everything else is entirely disabled.

I've sent an e-mail to techsupport:
I would like to see hairpins better handled: why aren't they attached to notes, placed automaticly on a default distance under/above the staff? (see the Sibelius software).
This is my only remark about Finale. (However colouring notes would be usefull too).

Please explain what you mean by that. Presently the layers appear in different colors, which is a very helpful alert when you've put music in the wrong layer. Are you trying to have certain passages in different colors?

As a P.S. to Peter's post about jumping to the next page in Page View, now you can also jump to the next screen in Scroll View with the same command. (Cmd-PageDown)

Bill,

what I mean, is I want to have my note(head)s coloured, I need this for my Analyse course in Music Theory.
At school we work with Sibelius Software, and there you have the abillity to colour the notes in every color you want.

Finale show its limits there. Althoug it can print in color, according to the specifications defined in View->Select Display Colors,
as we all know, there are only 4 colours for the notes, 1 for each layer.
If you are looking for more colours so all your notes can use a different one, that is another story... Maybe someone else will, but I don't see a possibility to use different colours besides the 4 colours associated to the 4 layers. And even juggling with these 4 in one single bar can be time-consuming. And no way to color the noteheads separately.

I agree with one comment above. I would like to have the ability of changing volume, tempo, patches, etc, during playback, instead of having everything frozen and unaccessible while the piece is playing back. To incorporate something like MOTU's Freestyle ability would be ideal. MOTU do not seem interested in updating Freestyle to OSX yet. Maybe Finale folks can purchase the rights to it.
Maybe someone could take this whole thread and put it into Finale improvement requests.

Thanks! Kind of a finger-stretch for something I'd use a lot. I'd make my own macro with another key-combo instead, using arrow keys or something.

Indeed!

Chord suffix creation is tedious stuff, especially if one is PICKY about how neat and natural-looking the suffixes are relative to the Chord Root.

Some needed improvements that come to mind are:
. allow ZOOM in suffix editor to allow user to fine tune placement of characters
. get rid of linear character entry
--> if I need to create the suffix C13(b9), it would be nifty if I could duplicate my already-existing C7(b9), and replace the '7' with '13'. The currently-available solutions to this problem are not user-friendly.
. change the interface which requires the user to deal with one character at a time for changing fonts, etc...

My 2 cents.

In general I am frustrated with having to physically change aspects of scores that are the common standard. If something is commonly standard in music - Finale should have it's faults set at that --- out of the box.

Why do we have to map percussion sounds - a cymbal by default should sound like a cymbal when the part says "cymbal". It should not be a rarely used latin percussion drum. Let's face it - most users will use general midi instruments -

A snare drum should default to "snare drum" etc............

My buddy, who was constantly irritated by this moved to Sibelius and claims that he rarely has to map any percussion in that program.

Has there ever been a "fix" for the stuttering hangup that happens during playback?

Excuse me "Finale should have it's faults set at that " should have read "defaults". Must have
been some sort of Freudian slip........

Peter,

Am *I* missing something? The keyboard codes you mention to flip pages don't work on my powerbook (G4), F2005. Is there an equivalent on powerbooks? Control panel that needs to be adjusted? Would love to use that short-cut.

Best,

Sebastian

Figured it out: You have to hold the function key down together with command page up/down, and it works. Yeah!
Thanks for putting me on track!
