Posted By : wandamusic - 5/2/2016 9:05 AM | I emailed a file created in finale 10 that was on my laptop. Sent it to main computer. Instead of saving (silly me) I chose "open with" and proceeded to edit in finale to create a sound file.
Now I want to save this file and I keep getting a message that it is unable to save as it is "read only"
;-(
I have no idea - I did not change it to read only, did opening it this way do that? Did bringing it from finale 10 into finale 14.5 do that? (I have brought old files into newer finale before with no issues.)
I would love to save this before something crashes. Other than making a new file is this possible? Are there file attributes somewhere that I can change from read only to something else? There is no saved version on this computer.
Blessings,

Wanda,
I suspect that emailing the file caused it to be Read Only on the destination. I assume you know where it is located on your computer. Using File Explorer, Navigate to that location and right click on the file icon. open Properties at the bottom of the pop up list. There will be an attribute of Read Only that is probably checked. Uncheck it. See if that lets you save the file now. Chris' idea is also a good one. Come back, though, to your original and uncheck the read only attribute.

Posted By : wandamusic - 5/2/2016 9:44 AM | I cannot see it in explorer is it has never been saved. It is live in finale software, was opened from a file in my email that when asked if I wanted to save or open, I opened it in finale 14.5 from the file the email sent. So it never touched the hard drive, unfortunately.
And based on the message I get, there is that temp file somewhere in temporary internet files, but I am trying to SAVE the new work, whatever is in temp internet files will not help me. Finale 14.5 A bunch of Garritan collections not installed at the moment. Win 7, 8 gigs ram |

Posted By : wandamusic - 5/2/2016 9:46 AM | I have tried both save and save as, both give the same message, and as I said, changing attributes on the HD will not help me - I want to save the new work that currently is in finale, unable to be saved. Something happened in Finale, but I guess a mystery.
I am guessing I need to start a new file and copy over, yes? It seems this is something that the experts are not familiar with so maybe it is a one time quirk. Finale 14.5 A bunch of Garritan collections not installed at the moment. Win 7, 8 gigs ram |

Go back to your email program and save the attachment, the Finale file, to HD. This is what would have prevented this issue. It won't, of course, have any edits you made.
Your idea ought to work too. open a new file in Finale and copy/paste the recalcitrant file to the new one and save it.
I don't have time right now, but I'm going to try the email thing myself and see if I can figure out a solution to the dilemma. "Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about!"

Posted By : wandamusic - 5/2/2016 10:07 AM | Michelp, no I own this software. Thanks.
OK, I now know what CAUSED this. But no idea if it can be fixed.
I did some testing. I emailed another copy of the file from laptop to computer (after checking to see that file attributes were fine on laptop). I opened it, changed something then saved with no issues.
So I renamed the file on the laptop (to avoid possibly screwing up the open file in finale on computer) and emailed it and opened if with finale (without saving it on HD)
THIS is what caused the problem - opening it directly from the email rather than saving then opening.
I used AOL, not sure if it is something AOL did, but I doubt it as I never saw this issue before in probably 20 years of being on AOL. I often open directly from email , work on a document (not finale) and save.
SO SOMETHING clanged something in this file to read only, and I cannot save it. Does anyone know if there is anywhere within Finale to change attributes?
While anyone is thinking, I am going to hunt down the file in the temporary internet files folder and see if I can change attributes in that, then save this......

Posted By : Ron. - 5/2/2016 10:25 AM | As I said in my original response, Finale cannot change file attributes in this way. The read-only was set by your email program. I think you could have circumvented that by saving the email file, then opening it with Finale, instead of opening it directly from your email program. Finale 2014.5

Wanda,
I'm back at my computer now. I emailed a MUSX file to myself. Instead of saving the attachment (the MUSX file) in the received email, I opened the file directly, even though I was WARNED to save the attachment first. I modified a few things and tried to save the file. I got a similar error message, though understandably not exactly the same path as yours. I drilled down with File Explorer to the exact path/filename as shown in the error message, as I suggested you do. As I expected, the file was read only. I did as I suggested to you to uncheck the read only attribute. I then was able to save the file. The only problem with this is where did the file get saved. Well not surprisingly, it is saved in the same file path/name as in the error message, not the file path in your Finale preferences. The original, unaltered file is also located there, with a (xxx) added, to make it unique.
In Finale, under File, at the bottom section, you will find the path to the saved file, so you won't have to enter that convoluted file path again. I suggest you close the file that was opened via your mail client, open it again, this time within Finale, and save again, so it goes in your regular "Music" directory, according to your Finale Preferences.
You must not have followed my instruction, because it would have worked. It did for me.
You said... I am going to hunt down the file in the temporary internet files folder and see if I can change attributes in that, then save this......
This is the instruction I gave you. The "hunt" is already "closed" (birddog term). The full path is in the error message!
To avoid a mess like this in the future, as you now know, save the email attachment first in your "Music" folder, then open it within Finale.

Posted By : wandamusic - 5/2/2016 11:44 AM | Charles, in my case I was not "warned" it was just 2 options, open or save. I open all the time. And I already have been searching for that file (I have numberous files with a similar starting name in different saoftware and versions, and when searching in win 7 you cannot see much, only file names, sometimes date, sometimes not. I did find one and changed it but it appears to not be the correct one yet. Windows makes it so darned hard to find stuff in folders they like to hide. My dad is to be here in a few minutes, I am goign to try this later.
AND it was from finale 2010, was a .mus file, but like you, the email made it read only if you open.
Big mental reminder - never do this.

Posted By : Zuill - 5/2/2016 12:06 PM | I have emailed files back and forth to myself for years, but always saved the files first. So, that might be the reason I've never had this problem.
I now use the "cloud" for files I want to have available in both of my locations. It makes things much simpler. I do, however, save it locally before working, as I don't trust my connection to the cloud as being 100% "on" all of the time. The remote storage is good for that, for Finale anyway, but having the file saved locally can save a heap of trouble.

Wanda,
I use MS Outlook as my email program. My OS is W10.
You said... when searching in win 7 you cannot see much, only file names, sometimes date, sometimes not
This is not necessarily true. If you don't see the full path and full file name, then you need to make some adjustments in your file explorer. I cannot remember exactly where on W7 anymore, but there should be an "Options" somewhere where you can select "Change Folder and Search Options". A "Folder Options" dialog should open. Select the "View" tab across the top. There are many options available. Select at least "Display the full path in the title bar". To make any changes permanent, click on the "Apply to Folders" button and acknowledge that is what you want to do. Within the file explorer, there is a header for all the columns. The file name is the first column. Hover the cursor over the column separation until it turns into a double pointed arrow like this (<-|->). Then either drag to extend/shrink the width to reveal any hidden text, or double click to size the column to fit the displayed data. Right click on a blank space in the header to open a popup to choose which columns are displayed. I suggest to include at least the Owner and the Attributes. Owner is found under "More...". Note that there is also an option to "Size all columns to fit".
All these things are standard Windows OS "features". Perhaps you are not aware of them.

Posted By : wandamusic - 5/2/2016 3:59 PM | Thanks Charles, I just changed that folder view. I had not checked it before as it said only in windows classic, and I was not sure what that was.
Unfortunately it was no help while trolling thru files in temporary folders, or those that pop up in a searchfrom the start menu where the files I want are in temporary internet files. I took a pic of what I see. Since I had many file names and many reworks and I was emailing the file and downloading multiple time s- I have no idea which is the correct file.
I found one that seemed to be named correctly and changed attributes but that did not fix it. I know there are more there but I find nit hard to home in when I cannot see all the details - like DATE and TIME, etc. Back in Win XP days it was easier to search.

Wanda said... OK I found the file! You make this sound like it's some great mystery that has just been solved.
I don't mean to be rude or imply crassness or anything like that, but how many times do I have to say it! I've said it twice already. The complete path to your recalcitrant file was spelled out in the error message you posted earlier. You did not have to "search" for it. All you needed to do was use File Explorer and drill down each level of directory in the error message until you came to the end. I also suggest that you change the view of files in the File Explorer to "Details" and not what looks like "Content" from your picture. I apologize for not mentioning that you need to be in "Details" view to see the column header I spoke of.
As I said in my 2nd previous post, the OS puts the file in this bizarre location with read only access since you opened the file from your mail program without first having saved it. After removing the read only attribute, it will be saved in this same location. Go back and read my post carefully.
BTW: I'm glad you got it saved. It's a sinking feeling when you realize that your work is lost and you don't have it saved! or that !@#$!#$~ computer won't save my work. It happens to all of us. We learn how to avoid it. "Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about!"

When I saw that message I saw a lot of small print (it was much smaller on the screen than in the image I saved, I see now that I looked at it!) Ha ha if I had read your comment carefully I would have saved a lot of stress.
