Apple has just released OS X 10.11.6. While current versions of Finale and PrintMusic are fully compatible with this new version of the Mac El Capitan operating system, previous versions are not. Here are our corresponding recommendations:

If you’re using Finale 2014d, update to the free Finale 2014.5 (or don’t update to 10.11.6).
If you’re using PrintMusic 2014, update to the free PrintMusic 2014.5 (or don’t update to 10.11.6).

We will contact Apple and notified them of the incompatibility with previous versions.

In what respect is F 2014d not compatible with OS 10.11.6? As far as I can tell it seems to work OK for me here.

My MacBook has the OS up-date + F 2014d & F 2014.5, although my main Finale desktop has these with 10.9.5. For some things I find 2014 more stable than 2014.5, so I would very much like to know the nature of the problem in case I do decide to up-date the desktop's OS.

Entering an expression or articulation will cause a crash.

I did not know there was a 2014.5 print music?

It's probably just Apple that got the 2014.5 update?

Yes, that's right. It provides compatibility with the El Crapitan OS.

Interesting. One can enter expressions and articulations safely via metatool, but any attempt to go to the dialogues does indeed cause a crash in F 2014d with OS 10.11.6.

Finale 2014.5 was crashing in both 10.9.5 and 10.11.5 after about 3 to 4 minutes when (two days ago) I was attempting to let someone hear playback of a 10 minute section of a file in progress. There was no problem at all if I did this in 2014d. I'll check what happens in 10.11.6 later.

Mind you, I suppose I could do all the work in 2014.5 and then if I did want to demonstrate something to someone via playback (my main, near enough only, use for the facility) I could still do that easily enough after opening the file in 2014d.

It does suggest that one should be canny for a while before indulging in OS 10.12 (when that does eventually appear).

I just came in here to look if someone has experienced weird sluggishness in Finale... - and suddenly; when I read THIS - I realise that I recently made this update !!

Could it be that F 2014.5 behaves weird for others - concerning ReDraw functions?

I have never ever had these problems before! - now, working on a 1050 bars piece, I get the BeachBall more than often!! VERY annoying!
Is there something that I can turn off... or is it just incompatible?
(It seems like Finale is looking for something... The delays are somewhat similar to when one of your disks has gone "to sleep"... and the app waits for it to spin up again).

Would be very grateful if there was a way out of this.

Which of the automatic functions are turned on for you?
You can safely turn off the program setting “Automatic Music Spacing”, and instead apply music spacing manually as often as needed.

When you have finished entering the music, and are working on the layout, there is no reason to have the Multimeasure Rest document setting “Update Automatically” turned on.
Turn it off, and you will avoid unpleasant surprises with “Update Automatically” destroying your measure width adjustments.

Thanks for the hint Peter,
?? but why do you think it's Music spacing?!?!
(As far as I can tell - that works fine and fluid)

No. there is something in the background that's breaking!! and it is since I made this OS X update!

I apologize if I have expressed myself unclearly.

I have no idea what the culprit could be.
“Automatic Music Spacing” was just an example of the automatic functions.

The option “Update Automatically” for Multimeasure rests is a document specific setting.

Other automatic functions are program specific, e. g.
- Auto Save File(s) Every __ Minutes
- Make Backups When Saving Files
- Smart Hyphens & Word Extension: Update Automatically

In
Preferences - Edit
there is an entire pane with automatic settings.
Take a look at them - and try turning some of them off.

Nono. what I am referring to is something new - BEHIND finale!
- I have been working with 2014.5 FLAWLESSLY since it was released!! So it has to be something that I changed in the system.
(maybe this update was too good to be true, after all) ? ;-)

Well.
I have been watching the "Activity Monitor" meanwhile working in Finale... and I see some weird behaviour concerning the "mdworker32" - which is spotlight functions.
At the moment - it "locks" my whole system, actually. Beachball rolling - and nothing happening.
I'm not 100% sure if this is a clash between OS X .11.6 and Finale... or if it is something even deeper.
(I only have this malfunction in Finale, though).

I turned off some spotlight indexing locations (for instance where my Finale file is located at the moment). Not really better...
- I wonder if it is something with the quick-view function... ???

(Wich works TERRIBLE on my system, since Finale ALWAYS tries to make a quick View of my scores, but fails bluntly; since I use my private music-fonts).

will keep you posted if I find the solution..

One thing that helped me when I had this was simply to quit and restart Finale. I used to leave Finale running for very long periods but nowadays I've gotten into the habit of quitting regularly.
